I think pretty much every single country outside the USA would disagree with you saying it's exclusively a child's sport. But yes, in the USA it's a piddly little kids sport. Everywhere else, it's the richest, or 2nd richest sport (to Formula 1) in the world.
You're right about it being readily available though. You can kick a ball around with a kid pretty much as soon as he/she's able to walk. You don't have to wear armour and have 195 players on each team. Football is relatively simple too. 2 teams, 2 goals, kick the ball in the other team's net. The basics are simple, the game flows easily. Rugby is prohibitive to small kids in this sense because it's incredibly technical. It doesn't have to be brutally physical at all ages, but the rules are far too complex for very young kids. Also the technique for passing the ball isn't the simplest.
I still just don't get American sports. When I watch American football I can't help but wish they'd just get on with it.. Stop start stop start stop start.. zzzzzzz fuckin let them go at each other ffs!!!!! If there weren't stoppages every 5-10s the game might be fun to watch, and would be fantastically physical.
I suppose Ice Hockey is more flowing and more entertaining in that sense. I just wish it was easier to see the puck! lol.. My eyes are shit, but seriously, how big a TV do you need?
Seriously though.. baseball.. wtf? I've tried.. I really have tried. I just felt like finding something more entertaining to do was easier than just sitting there watching it. It's the most incredibly dull, uneventful, miserable sport I have ever seen. Even the commentators seem to really struggle to get excited about it. I can't imagine how anyone could enjoy watching it.
I went on holiday to Cuba a while ago and there were some baseball teams staying in the hotel. They were obviously there for some tournament. I saw Brazilian and something else. And I couldn't help wondering why countries like Cuba and Brazil, whose cultures are so musical, creative and entertainment-oriented, could bear to play such a mind-numbingly fucking boring non-eventful sport which is completely bereft of any entertainment value whatsoever.
Even Olympic Curling is better than baseball.
