Soaking up pressure and inviting your opponent to attack for long periods can be a common tactic. Especially if you don't feel you have the strength in the team to dominate the middle of the field. You just make sure you don't concede and you take your chances when they come. Sounds like the USA team possibly played into the Dutch team's hands. But then the Dutch team is immensely talented. They were probably the most technically gifted and exciting team at the Euro's but they just lacked consistency and a decent coach.
Also try to remember that most European club teams fight extremely hard to stop their players going to the Olympics because it coincides with the start of the season for most countries. A lot of teams there are missing some of their best players due to this.

Yeah I noticed NED didn't have Van Brockhorst or their amazing goalie, but US didn't have some of their better players also, including their equally amazing goalie (from what I've seen.)

Seriously though.. baseball.. wtf? I've tried.. I really have tried. I just felt like finding something more entertaining to do was easier than just sitting there watching it. It's the most incredibly dull, uneventful, miserable sport I have ever seen. Even the commentators seem to really struggle to get excited about it. I can't imagine how anyone could enjoy watching it.
Yeah, you pretty much just perfectly described baseball.
Even Olympic Curling is better than baseball.
