Huge difference. But in terms of violence they're probably about on the same level, possibly with Aussie slightly more brutal.

Anyways, I stayed up all night watching the olympic goodness. Hurts me to think about the USA v. Netherlands soccer game, USA clearly outplayed them (which is amazing considering how great The Netherlands is) and just got unlucky at the end. Pretty amazing that USA actually has caught up (or close to) to the rest of the world in soccer.

Soaking up pressure and inviting your opponent to attack for long periods can be a common tactic. Especially if you don't feel you have the strength in the team to dominate the middle of the field. You just make sure you don't concede and you take your chances when they come. Sounds like the USA team possibly played into the Dutch team's hands. But then the Dutch team is immensely talented. They were probably the most technically gifted and exciting team at the Euro's but they just lacked consistency and a decent coach.
Also try to remember that most European club teams fight extremely hard to stop their players going to the Olympics because it coincides with the start of the season for most countries. A lot of teams there are missing some of their best players due to this.
