Well i guess someone has to bitch at russia cuz they just destroyed georgia... and western europe cant really bitch cuz russia will just shut off all the gas and oil to them and fuck them over. So USA is the only one who can really try to "punish" them...

Actually as with all situations such as this, there's plenty of scope for punishment should it be justified. Russia are a member of the G8. Expulsion would hurt, a lot. The Russian-EU trade agreement is up for renewal soon, there's scope to do some harm there. There's some other stuff along those lines. Money hits them a lot harder than bullets. Russia want to be a major player in the world economy. They want it bad.

But in this instance it all started with the Georgian army firing a rocket barrage into South Ossetia, targetting Russian peacekeepers and separatists. The Russians claim about 1000 people died in that attack, although it hasn't been confirmed. But even if it's 1/10 of that it's justification for crippling the Georgian army imo. I don't see why the EU would punish them for this.

This isnt a counterpoint really. I havent quite grasped the entirety of the situation b/c in all honesty when it comes to much of the eastern european countries i'm very uninformed.

But...I was under the impression that there were first rocket attacks that came from South Ossetia and Gerogia then responded with their military action. Is this wrong? or was it a problem with logistics of a counter attack?

This is wrong, because South Ossetia doesn't have any rockets or anything like that.

it wasnt a military operation, it was just smuggled weaons and shortrange mortar/rocket fire that im aware of.

It's hard to read between the lines when there's so much different information being reported. But even the BBC are reporting the story as the Georgians firing first. And they're usually government fanbois (the British government is calling Russia's action excessive and disproportionate etc etc blah blah).
