Sadly, truer sentiments are rarely spoken.

Our government doesn't tacitly control our media. It's much more convoluted than that.
Suffice it to say, our government exercises extreme influence over our media.
That, coupled with the fact that they are so easily manipulated that even our enemies do it at will, and we're almost worse off in certain ways than if we had Pravda. Almost.
But then again, there is Fox News.

"I have the greatest admiration for your propaganda. Propaganda in the West is carried out by experts who have had the best training in the world — in the field of advertising - and have mastered the techniques with exceptional proficiency ... Yours are subtle and persuasive; ours are crude and obvious ... I think that the fundamental difference between our worlds, with respect to propaganda, is quite simple. You tend to believe yours ... and we tend to disbelieve ours."

Almost?
Too many good ones to quote here.

Heh, I was just about to post that Colby quote and then I saw your link. Sure enough it was on there, that site pretty much covered all of the major ones.
But no Parenti?
Quote:

"The enormous gap between what US leaders do in the world and what Americans think their leaders are doing is one of the great propaganda accomplishments of the dominate political mythology." - Michael Parenti, The Sword and the Dollar

Edit - This one is particularly relevant to this thread:
Quote:
"...There are clear warning signs that an increasingly incestuous relationship exists between the media titans and the corporate military powers that Eisenhower so feared.
For example, the number-one purveyor of broadcast news in this country - NBC, with both MSNBC and CNBC under it's wing - is owned and controlled by General Electric, one of the nation's largest defense contractors.
Is it not significant that as GE's various media subsidiaries predictably line up to cheerlead the use of U.S. military force, it was at the same time posting substantial profits from the sale of the high tech tools of modern warfare it so shamelessly glorifies?
Would we not loudly condemn such a press arrangement were it to occur in a nation such as Russia or China?... Were it to occur elsewhere, would this not be denounced as symptomatic of a state-run press?" - David McGowan

Re: Fomka
Didn't notice that. List isn't exactly comprehensive eh? First saw that quote when I visited the 3rd world traveler website some years ago and I still find it flawed. It's not propaganda if the people simply don't see it. Our media, both independent and corporate, does a shit job of reporting anything approaching real international news. Having grown up on BBC, French news service and a few others, Americans don't see shit about the world. That's not propaganda, that's blindness and ignorance.

Re: Fomka
Negative ads are always the most effective. Regardless of whether or not people profess to hate them - they still watch, talk about, and contemplate them.
