Default Re: Google Developing a New Browser.

After using it yesterday evening and this morning, I've got a list of "The Bad Things" that I've personally encountered.

1 - No installation directory options during the install. You can't select which drive you want to install on, which leads me to...

2 - The installation path is horrible. C:\Documents and Settings\UserID\Local Settings\Application Data\Google? Why it can't hang out in c:\Program Files?

3 - The application insists on writing data to the default installation path. While most people won't care, I need to be able to run the browser from a flash drive when I'm at work, and even if I copy the entire \Google directory to my flash drive and manually launch the application from there, it still reads and writes data from the default installation path. That isn't cool.

The browser still has a lot of potential though, and I'd be really surprised if minor issues like these and the ones other people have mentioned aren't addressed fairly quickly.

This is definitely fast and responsive, but definitely incomplete feature-wise. I've had a left-side bookmarks/folders pane in every serious program I've used since the dawn of time, and I'm certainly not going to give that up now.

I personally like the bookmark toolbar better than the left-pane favorites of IE. They just need a java plugin and its all I need.

As great as the idea sounds, the fact that their code tree is going to be mangled between 3 different sandbox backends will cause huge problems and cause the failure of this.

Not to mention, their lack of sight on supporting 64-bit in the future.

Also, most of these UI-based features have been done in other browsers in the past/current, and are pretty much things that are going to be done anyway.

As for the javascript stuff, TraceMonkey and SquirrellFish, already being done, which makes v8 nothing special.

Nifty little browser, though on my system it is barely faster than my heavily add-on laden Firefox. The interesting technology here is the tab's running on their own processes, which MS is going to incorporate in IE8 and no doubt Mozilla won't be far behind adding it to FF. The private browsing feature also sounds interesting, but again MS is putting it into IE8 and while not currently a default thing for FF, it is something available as an add-on.

Chrome is just too immature atm for me to use (not knocking it, it is a beta after all), I'd rather not have to learn a new browser (not hard, just every one does things a bit differently), miss the power of FF's hardcore add-ons (Adblock/NoScript/etc) and it isn't giving off a good vibe with its licensing agreement or install/save directory.

Watching from the other side of the fence for now...

They had to modify that part. It orginially stated that ANYTHING you posted to the web belonged to Google and not you at all whatsoever in any form.
