Huge difference. Obama himself has given different responses at different times of political pressure on his relationships to Ayers and other controversial people. As the pressure rose Ayers went from "friendly" to "just some guy I worked with". Even if the acts were done when Obama was 8--which his campaign uses as a defense-- the fact that he is unrepentant, uses moral equivalence to defend his actions and wishes he did more, makes the association questionable since it was friendly all the way up until Obama started catching flak for it. It's the same problem with Rev. Wright, when you listen to the older interviews and hear Obama clearly saying Wright could be a problem then disavowing any knowledge of how controversial his pastor could be. Obama is too smart to have not looked into Wright-- a man he mentioned prominently in the positive-- and not have found anything. That's not swiftboating, that's asking a legit question about how the man keeps ending up in bad company and how he shifts when confronted.
