Default Government Transparancey...

I am sure this isn't limited to Republicans, but it brings up a good question, especially in regards to how officials claim "privilege" and how sometimes e-mails from "unofficial" sources can just disappear. What can/should be done, if anything, to ensure that our officials actions are clear and open for scrutiny? I am sure this has always gone on, but in the digital age, electronic media has taken the place of face-to-face meetings where there would be no record of the conversations. Should we look at our new technology as a way to "improve" things, or possibly just console ourselves to the fact that it has always been this way, and probably always will be?

Hackers Access Palin's Personal E-Mail, Post Some Online - washingtonpost.com

A snippet:
"Among the e-mails released as part of the records request in June were several from Ivy Frye, an aide, asking a state official whether private e-mail accounts and messages sent to BlackBerry devices are immune to subpoena, then reporting the answer to the governor and her husband, Todd, who also uses a Yahoo e-mail address. "

"An Alaska activist has filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking disclosure of e-mails from another Yahoo account Palin used, gov.sarah@yahoo.com...

Andrée McLeod, who filed the FOIA request, said yesterday evening that Palin should have known better than to conduct state business using an unsecured e-mail account...

McLeod's Anchorage attorney, Donald C. Mitchell, said Palin declined to comply with a public records request in June to divulge 1,100 e-mails sent to and from her personal accounts, citing executive privilege."

Since google has shown that it actually does track individual user information, why not a FOIA request against them to see what Palin shops for on ebay? Did she watch the "cat attacks baby" video on youtube? did she google "barack obama sex tape?" (don't open it, it's a virus!)

/rofl.

This isn't an attack on Palin, I was just using it as an example of how officials sometimes seek to shield themselves from scrutiny. I am sure they all do it. The question is what, if anything can/should be done? How would one determine and enforce a "no official business outside of..." rule? I am not sure that it could be done. However, I think officials should make a good faith effort to use official channels. That is not what it appears some politicians are doing though. Are they seeking to cloak their activities?
Maybe, maybe not, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I get the impression they are essentially checking to see which avenues of clandestine communications are available.

If you believe Sarah Palin's Yahoo Mail account was actually hacked, I've got a bridge up in Alaska to sell to you.

Sad, but true in a way, I guess

I'd still prefer "Rovian press release."

Updated at the bottom of the article you linked.......

"the hacker changed Palin's password to "popcorn" after resetting it through a "forgot my password" link. If that's the case, please see this post about how such links have become the "easy way in" for hackers, and I apologize for impuning Palin's password-selection capabilities."
