I could never in a Million years buy a BMW for my son (when he is of age to drive) but even if I could there is just no way in hell. College graduation present, perhaps (if I were rich) but probably not.
I only comment because you asked for opinions. My opinion is that a bus pass would work fine and if you live in an area with no public transportation (like me) I would use my credit to get him a decent used car in the 4 to 5 k range in which he would be responsible for all payments, maintenance and insurance and if one payment was late (I would make all payments to assure it was done and he would pay me back in turn) that car would sit, parked.... Different parenting styles I guess.
My 10 year old has learned since he was born that if he wants something he works for it. He has been feeding and caring for our Chickens since 5 years of age and is now an asset to our family in that he is responsible, polite, hard working and a good student. He gets a nice allowance (for which he works hard for) and has learned to save up to buy all those extras he wants. Never will you see my son throwing a tantrum in a store or DEMANDING anything- He will politely ask if he may borrow the money for a toy, game or non essential to paid back to my Wife and I upon returning home.... Consequently he takes very good care of the things he has and is respectful of the value of things.
We probably wont be able to afford to send him to College so we are instilling in him the fact that if he wants an education he must work hard and get a full scholarship. It is what it is. Success or failure is completely up to him and we are just here to give him good moral direction, guidance , understanding and most of all Love.
We are all from different economic brackets, different Political Philosophy and have different ideals as to how our lives are lived and children raised. I would throw my kids ass out on the streets if he wasn't going to school. Period. If he was age 18 and working, his ass can get an apartment and learn about life. If he was 18 and not working , his ass can sleep under a bridge. If he was 18 and going to school or bettering himself he could certainly live at home, rent free (assuming he continues to pull his weight in the chores) and if he wanted a car he could spend his free time at a part time job and buy a car within his means.
Buying a kid a car with a price tag that your average working person couldn't afford when the kid has NO JOB. Good luck with that LFG.

Okay so I actually read that wall of text..... but I have to point out you actually spend money on PC, games, monthly fees to SoE. I can understand your other thoughts on making him work for stuff even if I think your to harsh, but his eduction, I would drop a lot of shit for my kids options to be what he want.
But then again I spoil my kid because I can afford it, I spoil him because I want him to be abel to be a kid for some time, and I probably give him a Car for when the time comes as well in the same if not over LFG price range, just because I want him to have a new and Safe car and understand the need for it to have some "coolness" as well

My opinion is that LFG shouldn't delete Hall of Flame threads. Just saying.

Thank you for reading my wall of text, lol. Yes, I spend money on PC gaming (no monthly fee's to SOE any loner though) and on a whole lot of other things I probably dont need. My son gets a huge allowance for someone his age (he is also required to work much harder than most kids as we have a homestead) part of which is held back and saved for him when he reaches an age to decide what he is going to do with his life.
I am not going to be rich ever, nor am I going to ever be in a position to pay for higher education. Ever. That dosent mean I am going to scrape every penny I have and live like a pauper to guarentee my child an education. Its up to him.
Our neighbors kid just got a full scholarship because he worked hard and realized the value of an education. They do exist and if you want it bad enough you will work for it and nor rely on your parents to bury themselves with debt because you didnt make the grade. If he wont work hard enough to get a scholarship, he must not really want (nor expect me) to work twice as hard to put him through school.
We give him the tools he needs to make it in life and if he chooses not to take advantage of his situation thats his choice. Its my philosophy and right or wrong its the way I am trying to make his life as smooth and easy as possible and not give him an attitude of entitlement and a value system of materialism and thought process of "everyone else has one so I NEED it"
