Interesting interview I heard Tuesday on this topic. This guy thinks it would be "a stretch" that we would loose 1 million jobs. He makes some pretty good points. NPR Media Player Towards the end of the interview he seems to imply that a failure of one of the big three would only yield a job loss of around 150k, including non-direct employees.

The other problem is that many seem to equate "bankrupt" with doors shuttered and never to open again. Versus Bankrupt/reorganization (which pretty much all of the airlines have or are going through) don't see any crying over them? Hell I work for a former Fortune 500 company that went through reorganization 5 years ago... we are stronger, faster and much better than we were before the Re-Org.

Well, if we are going to throw free capital at Wall Street investment banks, money that will never be paid back, then we sure as hell can loan GM the cash they need to stay afloat. Bailouts aren't desirable but neither is loosing 2 million more jobs.

This isn't like the Wall Street giveaway, these loans will actually be paid back. Just like Chrysler did in the 80's.

And the government has been holding the hand of the commercial airline industry and bailing them out with loans since it's inception. Not even a fair comparison.

"consumers" have been bailed out for years and years. Food stamps, Family Investment Plan, bankruptcy filings on credit, court ordered interest amelioration (chapter 13), the stimulus packages, college grants...

Someone come up with a total for that, I'm going back to my grain elevator design.

The bailout was a bad idea to begin with and we will see this later on. We're in a recession folks!
