I do concur. The whole concept of hate crimes is absurd to me. Killing someone to steal their car is no different to me than killing someone because they chopped their dick off and are pretending to be a chick. Why should one be punished more than the other?

Re: Day of Remembrance
the motives, duh. you kill someone to steal a car because you're either poor, need money for drugs, or just an asshole. whereas in hate crimes it's just plain because the person is different.

Why does that matter? You killed someone either way.

But obviously because that person held his/herself to a different moral code, that makes the same crime, much, much worse!

Re: Day of Remembrance
So you don't think a neo-Nazi who targets and assaults a black man is more dangerous to society than say, a biker who beats up a dude in a bar brawl?
Essentially the same crimes, but it seems clear to me that one is much worse.

They aren't the same crimes. Presuming both fights result in a death, one is first degree murder while the other is anything from second degree down to manslaughter. The law already takes into account the severity of the crime.
Even removing death from your scenario, the biker would like be charged with assault while the nazi would likely get attempted murder. Again, the law already recognizes degrees of crimes. Trying to tack on another layer skirts way too dangerously into thought police.

So if I killed someone because I needed money, I'm a better person than if I killed someone for no real reason at all? (Assuming only 1 kill possible)
