Argh I thought if you added someone to ignore it ignored their posts too? Did I do something wrong? I don't want to read his posts and I have a compulsion to do so anyway I need a feature to prevent me from the "macabre joy" I get out of seeing someone so dumb

If you click on his name, it should take you to a screen that says something like "ignore this user" in the center of it. All you need to do is click on that and yes, it should prevent you from seeing his posts. Let me know if you really really try that and it doesn't work, I hate spending an hour troubleshooting crap like that unless absolutely necessary.
