I'd look at whether my old car works or not, then do something else with the $35k.

I wouldn't even consider a used car right now unless it was certified pre-owned. You can get a new car/warranty for a better interest rate then used. The OP didn't say how he was paying for it. I wouldn't buy American either, especially GM. The quality still isn't high enough for what you are paying.
