Election results 2009
There's no denying that Republicans have at least some cause to celebrate. They've won governor races in Virginia and New Jersey. This reflects poorly on Obama because he stumped for the Democratic candidates in both races. To top it all off Maine voters struck down gay marriage.
However there's also cause for alarm for the GOP. They've lost yet another seat in the House of Representatives, New York's 23rd District, which has gone Republican for over a century.
It was an interesting race to say the least. Republicans had nominated moderate Dierdre Scozzafava, but then Sarah Palin and her Teabaggers moved in and drummed up support for a more far right candidate, businessman Doug Hoffman, under the ticket of the Conservative Party. He surged ahead of Scozzafava in the polls, and eventually she withdrew from the race.
She had the last laugh, endorsing the Democratic candidate Bill Owens. His victory is a major setback for Palin and the social conservatives who have taken over the GOP. Without a doubt Palin is the best thing to have happened to the Democrats. You betcha.

The Owens victory is in no way shape or form a setback to them.

For who, the GOP? You mean the fact that it's a historical victory in a major Republican stronghold isn't a setback? Nor the fact that their nominee probably would have won if Palin and others didn't get involved because they felt she wasn't conservative enough?

If the nominee they put forth had stood a chance, she wouldn't have been run out of the race. As for who, you already said it, that wing of the GOP. They made a point, victory in the general or no and it's one that's going to stand out. For that wing, this was neither loss nor setback. Given the vote counts, it's fair to ask if her name being on the ballot next to the R was the clincher.

Re: Election results 2009
Finally the fucking phone solicitors will stop calling me while i'm trying to sleep damn it.
Both of the GOP candidates (mayor and congressional) here were a good bit too far to the social conservative right for the area. As a result they lost, go go democracy.
Both candidates stuck me as pricks, but Hoffman more so, the asshole is actually trying to launch an investigation into a conspiracy between the actual republican candidate and the Dems.
Because she endorsed Owens after dropping from the race after her party leaders basically endorsed her then changed their minds and buried her for still supporting the SAME shit she did when she went for the nomination in the first place. It isn't like she hid being pro-choice and it isn't like they had never endorsed a pro-choice candidate before.
The GOP basically fucked up hardcore and Owens capitalized.

They basically lost that on purpose to prove a point.
A dumb point, but none the same, a point.
I thought it was quite interesting 65% of independent voters went GOP

Independent voters need to make a new party. The GOP and Democratic parties won't come through for them in the end, they never really have.
