Re: Cops vs. Skaters
I saw this a few days ago thru myspace bulletins =\
You don't know what happened with the first kid he could have done anything for the cop to react like that.
The other kids.. mostly.. the cop was right to do what he did. They were yelling back at him and getting out of control. He didn't have the right to choke the girl like he did.. thats the only thing I think he did wrong.
PS.. I'm a skater

Re: Cops vs. Skaters
Apparently these kids havent learned anything from David Spade during his role in Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol.

Re: Cops vs. Skaters
Even once we get accept that this is simply over skateboarding (scratches head and ponders) we look at what happened.
It seems that recording an overzealous cop getting a little out of control while trying "to control a situation", and vocally questioning that cop in a calm manner in public will also get you handcuffed.
Had all the kids reacted the way the camera kid did, the cop would have probably been mellower. They didn't so he wasn't either. Both parties crossed the line of proper conduct towards each other.
The kid in the red shirt with the camera though? All he did was record and question calmly. He was acting like a proper citizen should.
If I was the cop's chief I'd chew out his ass a little for this. I was the cameraman kid's parent, I'd be proud of him standing up against what he thought was excessive force, and for doing so in a well behaved manner.

Re: Cops vs. Skaters
So hang on, you celebrate "go skateboarding day" by breaking the law? What dumb fucking kids, lol. They deserve everything they got for that fact alone. There is a time, place, and method to arguing a law you disagree with. The idiots out there that think protesting laws to the police is an effective way to get your viewpoint across are seriously retarded. Cops don't make the laws, morons. It would appear the ordinance against skateboarding wasn't relaxed for the duration of "go skateboarding day", lol. That cop is by no means a model of law enforcement and certainly could have handled things differently, but when you are 16 (and breaking the law) and a cop points to you and says, "You sit down" and your reply is "NO"......in my opinion, you are free game for some tough love Rodney King action. The cop is kinda dumbass for losing cool, but the kids were way more dumbass for causing it.
Kind of sums up an entire generation....just read the youtube comments. Sad.
Police Officer: "Sit down"
16 y/o Skatergirl: "No"

Re: Cops vs. Skaters
I've had enough people call the cops on me for skating in places they didn't want us to. Hell, I've had the cops called on me for sitting on a skateboard in front of my friends skate shop that he owned. People can be fucking retarded sometimes with getting carried away about skateboarding.
However, every time I have talked nicely to a cop, and asked if he wanted to see the footage I had, ( I filmed all the time and people liked to accuse us of vandalizing, breaking windows, etc... complete bullshit btw), they would usually say sure and we would talk. No one would get in trouble, the cop would be completely cool with it and understanding. I remember one time getting into a nice conversation with a cop because he was just as pissed off as we were at the city for not building a skate park and doing the same with a new police station.
Now, there are a few cops out there who completely shut you off and are 100% dicks and you have no way to talk to them, and in those cases you don't fucking talk back to them. You say yes sir, no sir, ok sir. He's a fucking cop, doing his job. Let him do it and move the fuck on. I can guarantee if that kid would have just stopped, sat down, apologized and told the cop he didn't know he wasn't allowed to skateboard on the sidewalk the cop would have let him off and said just watch for signs etc.
Those kids took it to the next level, and it was mainly 1 vs 10. The cop did what he had to do.

Re: Cops vs. Skaters
If the kids were doing this in protest, they could have picked a different way to rebel against authority. I don't think they properly thought this out.
I used to be a skater, but I was a skater that respected other people's space. I never did it on sidewalks with a bunch of traffic, or parking lots that were full. It was dangerous for anyone else around my board. Little kids are unpredictable and can dart out in front of you while you're trying to skate. They can get hurt and it wasn't worth the hassle, so I just did it when no one was around (but me and my friends, of course).
I don't think the cop should have choked out the kid, but it was just the two of them trying to control a mob of teenagers.
The kids shouldn't have tried to skate on a busy sidewalk, end of story.

Go skateboarding day. It's one day out of the year that everyone goes and skates just to skate and have a good time. If you have any contact with anyone who skates, you hear about it. They were just riding.

Re: Cops vs. Skaters
...Ok, that still doesn't take away the fact that they shouldn't have been skating on the sidewalks, period.
The businesses have problems with skaters because the skaters don't care where they skate.
If they were a bit more courteous, they would probably get their parks where they could. There are ways around it and ways the skaters can get the money to get the park.
