I agree. The bullshit they are doing to internet radio stations really pisses me off, as I'm an avid internet radio listener! They are trying to charge double or even TRIPLE the royalty costs that a station pays to play the song. If they play it on the radio, they only pay royalties to the songwriter and its based on frequency of playing. For internet radio, the new ruling is to pay royalties to both the song writer and the band/singer who plays it. And its based on how many listeners, since that is relatively easy to track online as opposed to traditional radio. At least that's the way I understand it, I could be wrong.
Internet radio was a great way for small bands who had been rebuffed by recording executives to get heard. With the new royalty rates, many internet radio stations will have to close down, they can't afford the outrageous rates that the industry is pushing on them. Another outlet for good music is getting shut down. How is this shit NOT an oligopoly? The big-wigs at the big publishers push these royalties to the point of disgusting. As if they weren't rich enough!
Oh, and if you want to fight the royalty rate changes, go to
http://www.savenetradio.org/. They have ways that you can write letters to your representatives in DC to express your concern. There's an open bill now to combat this, and I know when I wrote to my representatives (both house and congress) I received 2 generic replies, and one that actually sounded like the person gave a damn what I said.
