I wonder if it's a good or bad thing when the dream of "making it big" at the hands of a label dies away. Maybe it'll make truly shitty bands more cognizant of the fact that truly shitty music should never sell well in any market. And that the harder work to "make it to the top" will deter gimmick bands.

I rarely purchase CDs anymore because I steal all my music online. It's okay, though, I justify it by saying "albums these days are nothing but filler and not worth paying for" and "they need to find a new business model, the current one is flawed and outdated."

You've heard of inflation? That unchanging price was dropping by 3% every year. We could only wish to be so lucky with all our consumer products.

I buy what I like, regardless of what kind of assholes it's funding, but there just hasn't been much worth buying recently. I'm just biding my time until the first Spinnerette album comes out.

Nice try. But if the price was artificially high in the first place, then you're really gaining no benefit from an equally artificial 3% price drop. Imagine if they would have said that 20 years ago?

"Yeah, we're charging you 20 bucks for a CD now, but just think, in 20 years prices will be closer to where they should be due to inflation".

Even if inflation wasn't taken into account, the prices have dropped. It was like $17+ a disc back in the 80s, and you can get most for $9-11 at Best Buy.

I download discographies and buy cd's slowly. Given enough time I will own every cd of every band I like. I know the bands don't see much money from the sales, but it has got to help them when they sell cd's I would think. I refuse to buy a cd if I have only heard one song off it, so I download it and listen to their stuff. If I like it I'll start buying their cd's, if not, fuck em.

That is pretty much what I do also. If I like the band I buy their regardless of how I originally "heard" their music be it download, radio, etc.

Just curious since there's all this talk about prices. Did anyone submit for that class action suit many years ago about CD prices? I think I got a whopping $40 back but I did submit and got some cash back. I say fuck the recording industry.

I agree. The bullshit they are doing to internet radio stations really pisses me off, as I'm an avid internet radio listener! They are trying to charge double or even TRIPLE the royalty costs that a station pays to play the song. If they play it on the radio, they only pay royalties to the songwriter and its based on frequency of playing. For internet radio, the new ruling is to pay royalties to both the song writer and the band/singer who plays it. And its based on how many listeners, since that is relatively easy to track online as opposed to traditional radio. At least that's the way I understand it, I could be wrong.

Internet radio was a great way for small bands who had been rebuffed by recording executives to get heard. With the new royalty rates, many internet radio stations will have to close down, they can't afford the outrageous rates that the industry is pushing on them. Another outlet for good music is getting shut down. How is this shit NOT an oligopoly? The big-wigs at the big publishers push these royalties to the point of disgusting. As if they weren't rich enough!

Oh, and if you want to fight the royalty rate changes, go to http://www.savenetradio.org/. They have ways that you can write letters to your representatives in DC to express your concern. There's an open bill now to combat this, and I know when I wrote to my representatives (both house and congress) I received 2 generic replies, and one that actually sounded like the person gave a damn what I said.

*gets off soap box*

We just need tighter rules against media monopolies to peel back all the Clear Channel bullshit.
