Re: And this why I rarely purchase CDs anymore
Sounds like retailers are really getting desperate. I guess I would be too if I were an endangered species on the brink of extinction.
The RIAA is really kicking themselves in the ass over the Napster fiasco now. They had a deal on the table with them to change Napster to a pay service back when Napster was still the only P2P people downloaded from. They never pulled the trigger and instead shut Napster down. Now theres a fuckton of them out there and the RIAA is stuck with it's finger in a dyke that's already collapsed around them.
Fuck em.
I remember when CD's first came out. At first nobody wanted to buy them because they were so expensive. That is until we were assured that prices were only so high because it was a new technology, that they would eventually drop to around the price of a cassette.
20 years later and prices haven't changed. Ever.
So again, fuck em. And fuck Lars Ulrich too. I hope they all have fun fighting over the $.99 they get when someone actually downloads a single song legally on iTunes.

Retailers are hardly dying. CD sales have been record breaking every year since the players became affordable.

No they haven't.
CD sales are down 16% so far this year. Since the year 2000, they've been steadily declining, labels have laid off over 5,000 employees and more than 2,700 record stores have shut down (bye bye Tower).

The Tower records here (well the "famous" one around town) closed a few months ago. It was really sad, I remember going there as a kid and scouring the bins for music with my oldest brother whom I adored. I thought it was the coolest place in the world.
