Re: Your Fansite Sucks! - EQ2BattleMage.com
I think the lesson learned here for all fan sites is not to do contests that involve player or guild rankings, especially concerning the high end game.
Look at the history of EQ2Players regarding announcements that suggest one guild is best world wide, or got WW1st on an epic encounter. It has caused their forums to explode with unhappiness and drama every time.
High end players each have their opinions regarding what guilds and players are best in game, and become easily offended when anyone suggests a ranking that disagrees with their own.
So I think it is a huge mistake for EQ2Players and fan sites to rank players or guilds, UNLESS the purpose of doing that is to CAUSE drama and controversy, thus increasing traffic and user counts.
In the case of EQ2Battlemage.com, can anyone say they are worse off for the contest they sponsored? I score them as better off, actually. They got a ton of traffic and notoriety, and the controversy spawned by their contest put them on the map fan site-wise.
As the former leaders of the KKK and US Nazi parties used to claim, sometimes any publicity, even bad, is good publicity. PLEASE don't think I'm suggesting EQ2Battlemage.com is like or has anything to do with those hate organizations lol, they do not. I'm just stating that for the purpose of suggesting Arani ran a contest that ended up serving the purpose she intended, which was to increase traffic and users on her site. She probably learned a lot from the experience as well.
So is she a dummy? I don't think so.
