Weird Question?

Ok, weird question here.

I am writing an English essay and was curios if anyone was able to tell me... like when did EQ2 hit it big.. and how many accounts are registered to EQ2... if anyone is able to give out that information.

I'm not sure EQ2 did hit it big. I think it had a lot of hype in the beginning as most MMORPGs do, but it has maintained a somewhat steady and typical sub rate since. Competition is fierce these days so the MMO community is pretty spread out. And of course, WoW upped the ante for MMOs, and no one is going to match up to that freak success.

Numbers aren't official because no one at SOE shares this info, but this site claims to have somewhat of a grasp on the numbers through various sources. MMOGCHART.COM

I think people used to say that about EQ sub #s... Just had to throw out my told you so a few years early.

EQ2 did very well for a MMORPG at launch, but WoW brought in a few million people that had no business in the genre as well, which dwarfed the EQ2 success.

Now a lot of the EQ2 population is gone, but there still seems to be enough people (albeit retarded ones) to justify new (terrible) content.

Compare EQOA, which made it through one expansion, and now they just let it sit there, or Matrix Online, which couldn't even get to that milestone.

It's hard to compare the populations of online games, I would think, especially when they don't like to release numbers and anything you hear from their publicity department isn't likely to be the complete truth. I don't think there's any question that EQ2 has a lot fewer subscriptions than WoW, but based on one continents' obsession with all things Starcraft/Warcraft/Blizzard that's not surprising to me. The friends I have that play WoW are bored to tears with it though, and recently the postcards and e-mails SOE is sending out are bringing people back to at least try this one again.

The lower population on this game in my opinion is because it's more of an adult type game. The graphics don't look cartoonish, the puzzles in the quests and encounters aren't for young brains, and frankly, the people who play here don't tolerate childish behavior for the most part. I'm not talking trash talking, contested raid fight-with-each-other verbal crap, I'm talking being stupid in chat, being rude about camps (whether there is/should be camping allowed or not), basic MMORPG courtesy that you WILL not find in a game like WoW.
