Manrat, thats a good point, but if you're going to say using alakazam (or eq2i) is akin to cheating, then you'd also have to say that visitng eq2flames is cheating as well. It gives you a Huge edge over people who don't.
Well, sure. Keep in mind I don't really think it is the end of the world if some people use outside resources, and others don't. And, again, the edge gained from outside sources, in my mind, far outweighs any advantages is buying platinum.

Quote:
There are differences, though, between buying plat and using the web for research. The principal one is that selling plat is against SOEs rules, while looking up quests or getting help playing your class online is not. I used to play questing muds that had strict rules against getting quest hints, but thats just not the case here.
Yeah, I read the "but it's against the rules" thing alot, and I have to say, I have yet to believe that was what was bothering anyone who has ever said it. That doesn't mean people truly feel that way, it's just I doubt that is what the issue is in their mind. I mean, people buy and sell accounts, trade their password to friends/families, and they don't bat an eye. If there is an even remotely high end guild in the game, in which people are not actively doing that, or have already condoned it, I don't know of it. Again, let me reiterate, I personally don't think that is the end of the world either.

The second difference is that the plat selling/pharming affects the game economy much more than getting some undeserved quest items which are generally no trade. But the game economy is self healing. If everybody on the server but me bought 1 million plat tomorrow, I'd get some of it eventually, cause what are they going to do with the plat? But my overpriced masters, thats what.
Well, people farm all the time, and everyone does it. People tend to have a really selective memory about it, though. I've been in Poets Palace alot of times, and every one of them were for farming. I don't think I am ruining the economy by doing it, I am just generating my own income.

However, think about how many people have dome Speak like a Dragon, or the SoD quests, or Pris2, or whatever. Now, get rid of Alak, and have to rely on yourself to complete them....that number would be low low low. Again, I think that has a much far reaching effect on the game, then any botter going through PoF killing goblins.

Speaking of which manrat, are you ever gunna let the rest of us bid on those 4 masters?
I put them all in Cycle3 a week ago, are you blind?

First off, evidently I am cause I've been checking cycle 3 and never saw them. I went ahead and bid even though I'm probably too late.

Second, I'll tell you from my perspective there are only 2 things that bug me about the plat business. #1, the tells, and #2 when botters are farming mobs I need. Speaking of speak as a dragon, I had to fight a bot group for those names in OOLS to get access to the second door. That sorta ticked me off. Couldn't even get one of them to respond to me when i asked them to just open the door and I'd leave them alone. Thats just speaking for myself, I honestly think a lot of people are predjudiced because they are chinese and speak poor or no english. Look at how chinese guilds like Himalaya (now Red Welkin) are regarded. What do you think the real issue is manrat?

I don't know of anyone who bought an account, but I do know some who use macros to craft, and yeah, I turn a blind eye to that.

I'd agree that a huge part of it comes down to racism. Another part of it comes down to selfishness. The only plat farmers people bitch about are the goddamn gook yellow slanty eyes with their stupid engrish. You walk up to a bot that talks to you and everyone is peachy keen. People who bot as a means to craft well its A OK. Where the selfishness plays in is when it directly affects you. No one cares until a bot somehow fucks them over. We will never know , but i really wonder how many people bots have helped rather than hurt. Buying and selling plat isnt ethically bad as SOE has shown us, because they have setup servers dedicated to just that. Then through some form of burecratic horseshit, they have made everyone feel that is someone plays a game and gets currency that ultimately the work they put into it isnt theirs to do with however they want.

We tolerate macro crafting, but not macro killing, we dedicate entire servers to plat selling and then act like its some sort of illegal activity. The culture we have made with botting/plat farming/plat sales really doesnt add up as a whole.

I personally have not, but i can see some (keyword some) legitemate reasons for purchasing it. If im down on plat ill go farm a few heroic instances and usually get lucky with a master or atleast enough legendary junk to sell to make a decent profit. At the very least i can go farm gazer for a few hours and VT it all for a few plat.

I can however see somone buying it if they are in a higher end guild that does not have a guild split or does not do guild groups together (not like they are assigned or something, but grouping in guild is much less of a headache), as most hardcore players dispise pickup groups or farming instances for remedial loot that does not pay well. Imo the economy is already beyond saving though, inflation gets worse and worse, and it doesnt help that transmuted goods, and masters are extremely expensive.

Of course it's going to get abused, which is why guides should not have any power. Guides aren't paid by SoE, they are volunteers. Volunteers should never have any form of power, since they can abuse it mostly unchecked.
If you read my post again, you can see that i actually do say that the only problem is all the people that would probably misuse it.

And guides can actually travel to a wider variety of zones now.. i still got the policy thingie somewhere... but where.. hmm..

When i were in the guide program i tryed multiple times to get soe to reconsider the idea of giving guides more power, not cus im power hungry or anything, but cus it really annoyed me seeing obvious farmers whom i reported online at the same time the next day doing the same as the day before, because the GM "couldnt do anything about it" - its debateable wether its the right thing to do or not, theres alot of things they can do to counter it, and believe it or not, they actually track guides every movement, each time we did a /zone, /goto or any of the likes, it would be recorded - if we were in possession of items we were not allowed to have, it would be reported automatically. So it is possible to make a tracke and trace on commands like suspending people etc. and do appropriate actions, like banning the users account or the likes.. Even atm if you really fuck up as a guide, you can end up with a banned account - depends on how big the fuck up is, but 1 of the apprentice guides on my server ended up being suspended for 1 week and removed from the guide program cus he violated the P&P pretty bad - he bought guide gear which he wasnt allowed to have and wouldnt return it iirc.

Is there a link you can give me that will explain the guide program? Benefits, responsibilities, where would I sign up ... all that good stuff.

Haha I had a similar experience when I was doing Speak as a Dragon on my first character. There were multiple farmers kiling the mobs I needed for the quest and I was having a hard time getting them. I asked them to just open the door for me and they told me ''50g ok.''

I just re-read my poll question and realized it was poorly worded. Did everyone realize I meant to ask if you had bought plat from a plat seller? I didn't mean to ask if you'd bought a master or something from one of their farmers.
