Do people really get banned for buying gold?
I have wondered this for a long time.
If it is true, who is buying the gold?
If it is not true, then no wonder the farmers cannot be stopped.

Yes, the farmers can be stopped. My core strategy is to assassinate the level 70 wizards and necromancers, because (a) it is easily inferred that they provide the lion's share of sold plat, and (b) it typically takes them a full month to replace each such character. Oh yes, who could forget (c), the GM's are proactive about anti-plat-seller petitions like never before.
What it takes is about 10 minutes a day, lots of motivation, and wider player participation in ratting them out and turning them in.

The one time I knew of someone being caught buying plat, they had the plat deleted from their character, and they were suspended for a few days. They were not banned, although I'm sure if they were to be caught again, a ban would be more likely.

Alot of people have been banned recently, they were hitting one server at a time supposedly. I know on Nagafen alot of people got banned and that was SoE's reason.
