I think you'd be surprised how interesting the scene was back then.

For example;

One night I was on a "carded" conference call with Shadw and a few others and we called a Holiday Inn or something similar pretending to be employees of Visa. After quite a bit of back story, we had the front desk attendant reading off the last 15 guests credit card numbers over the phone via the transaction logs.

Thats hacking? Sounds like plain ole scamming. You were preying on the stupidity of the clerk, not the weaknesses of the machines.

Takes a bit more than social engineering because of how technical the machines are and how quickly youd be in jail if you dialed from your cellphone and/or local pay phone. But yes, it's in the ballpark (some call it Phreaking, but that's a lame term, imo). We did a lot more than just write/execute code and take EFnet channels.

Dude, social engineering is what the gubmint does with the tax code. Like when they give women money who have kids and no job, so having kids becomes their job, and they don't need husbands, just sperm donors. Then, whaddya know, you look up one day and realize no ones getting married anymore.

What they did was scamming. Thats all. I don't believe it took any special know-how to keep from getting caught doing that 20 years ago (isn't that when you were doing it?). Hell, the clerk probably never even realized how badly she'd screwed up, and it never got reported.

Because you never did it. It's very complex, to the point even I couldn't tell you the steps anymore. For instance, they do ask for verification. You need very first hand knowledge on how credit card processing works (and the terminology), in addition to the methods of having a clean line. And of course, the balls to be convincing.

PS. Clerk has nothing to do with it being reported (most the time). Credit card companies look for patterns and phone records don't vanish when you hangup.

EDIT:

My point was the early hacking scene wasn't limited to who had the best botpack or who got zero day exploits. It was a community like this forum, and we did a lot of things together. (Most that don't need repeating.)
