Denial of Service to plat-selling websites
I figure the easiest way to take these plat-selling websites out of commission is to generate painful amounts of useless traffic to them. The way we'd do this is by every one of us on a high-speed connection having a simple utility running in the background that does random sporadic page loads on their websites without using a browser and then discarding the pages. With 1000+ users this could quickly become a pain in the ass. And it would be done in a way not to impair other use of the PC, especially for playing EQ2.
A lot of us are on DHCP, so if they block our IP's, they block anyone else that may someday use our address.
Right?

DoS attacks are illegal and easily tracked. (I work IT network/security).

Re: Denial of Service to plat-selling websites
Yeah, they wouldn't block the incoming IP, they would just shut down your cable (or dsl) modem.

ISPs would, but plat-selling websiets would just block your IP.
Of course, the ISP for the plat-sellers would phone up your ISP and get your disconnected.

Found the examples I was thinking of.

Right, that is what I meant. Plus any decent ISP that notices this type of traffic is going to have bells going off all over the place letting them know.

Re: Denial of Service to plat-selling websites
Bad idea.
Stay away from DoS. Many years ago (1999) I was in a 'hacking group' called " conflictchrome", at around the time one of the first distributed denial of service clients (Trinoo) made by phifili came out, shortly thereafter many were visited by the FBI.
Some of us got off better than others, quite a few did time in jail. Could only find two articles on my ex-scene members.. but.. you can get into REAL trouble.

As a side note, these events are what fueled me to start playing MMOs and the reason I have my current job. Trust me, all the plat farming website has to do is call their uplink and 99% of the time they have a direct link to the FBI who will be on you in seconds with a search warrant.

Yeah, funny part about him is, he was too stupid to realize what he was doing at the time. He was stroking his epeen (on EFnet) about how big his network was and that he could down anything.
Well, I can't remember who exactly that dared him, but the intention was to keep them down 5 minutes. Well, the host box stopped responding, and history played out the way it did. Now he's a Canadian icon, go Canada! LOL
We were all kids back then, thankfully most of us grew up.
(PS. If any EFnet people (CF/TNT/Phorce/NN) are googling this send me a PM!)

Re: Denial of Service to plat-selling websites
completely fascinating discussion. totally over my head, but riveting nonetheless.
side bar: the reporter who wrote the article about mafiaboy is in serious need of remedial proof reading classes. unless being a 17 yeat old is some new disease I've yet to be educated upon...
