He harvested in like .1 second and if he fought anything, both his and the mob's attacks happened super fast. He also couldn't send tells because it would cause each key stroke to seem like he was holding down the key. He tried running around like that for a while and I told him he better just relog and see if it fixed it before someone saw him and thought he was speed hacking, then do a /bug report. Relogging fixed it, but he had the same thing happen one more time after. We never did figure out what was causing it.

In any case, it's clear the farmers have figured out how to reproduce this bug (it seemed totally random in my brother's case), or they found some hack that reproduces it. Hopefully SOE gets off their ass and fixes this.
In your brother's case its due to a bug that he has not patched. In the farmers case there is a handy dandy program that some banned idiot posted on flames which is able to consistently repeat this issue. For ppl that are unpatched and having that bug its fairly inconsistent in reproducibility. For these assholes its totally consistent and is using a program to ensure they can cheat the game to make plat.

How do you not patch a bug? I don't ever remember being given an option to not download the latest patch every time I log in. What am I missing?

This is a server problem, not a client one. Clients collect input and render output, they should never EVER be allowed to decide game mechanics independently of the server.

They have to let the client decide some things or there would be so many lag issues the game would be unplayable even on the fastest of internet connections. Timers in particular, but also any logic that deals with positioning. The server just needs to do sanity checks on those values to be sure no one has hacked them.

It's true tho. There is that program, the one we do not speak of.

No, no contradiction. the sanity checks don't have to be given any control. They can be setup to flag problems so real people can investigate and take action after the fact. Or, if they do take action, then they'll just shut down a connection thats getting too much lag (give them the benefit of the doubt here). But they do not have to slow anything else down until a problem is detected.

There are two statements of note in the linked article.

Quote:
Trying to keep track of all possible state transitions in a sophisticated multi-user game is computationally infeasible, even without regard to client-server issues.
This is your viewpoint.

Quote:
In any case, it is clear that allowing a fat client outside to directly muck with state information is not going to work.
This is mine.
