because you own the encounter.. and locking it prevents other people from messing with your mobs.. there were (and may still be) reductions to possibility of loot and reductions of XP if they crossed over a certain percentage of the mobs health in damage instead of you doing it..
But.. when you lock the encounter, it prevents them from attacking the mob.. but doesnt prevent the mob from attacking THEM... you get initial aggro and "own" the encounter with a low aggro attack.. and they pull aggro with their high aggro one.. and if you do nothing, the aggro wont shift back to you..so mob goes to town, they cant kill it, they die..
