Plat farmers on the same level as foreign exchange students? Please. I mean, I know they're people and all, but they've chosen a job where they routinely annoy the fuck out of everyone while helping to get money and gear for people who are too lazy or stupid to get it on their own. They exist in game to exploit the system for the gain of people who suck. And they know it, too--if they want to be left alone or accepted for that, too damn bad.

Exchange students, on the other hand, generally try to engage a culture on its own terms because they have respect for that culture. They don't want to be disruptive and will go to great lengths to learn the appropriate behaviors for the culture they're visiting. They'll also try to act as positive representatives of their own culture. Picking on someone like that is nothing like picking on someone who willfully adds frustration to one's chosen form of entertainment.

Sure, it's mean to mess with the farmers, but there's no "just because" about it. They're annoying, so I'm going to tell them what I think of them and applaud the people who get the better of them.

Heh I don't mind picking on plat farmers. But for some reason your post resonated with me in a way different than all the others in this. Maybe its just the extent you went, and the way you made fun of his poor English. I'm the first to admit that I am over-sensitive to making fun of someone with a language barrier because of the hate and prejudiced my own parents got when they immigrated here from Portugal. I dunno, tell him to fuck his mom or that that he's a whore, I'll laugh every time. Just something about your particular exchange just sounded like someone with a superiority complex picking on the slow kid in the back of the class.

Not saying you were wrong or he deserves to be treated better. Just something about that particular exchange that seemed mean-spirited, not just retaliation.

I guess coming from a position of knowing a second language with a limited degree of fluencey plus having taught immigrants English as a second langauge, it reinforces for me the difference between making a personal choice to learn a language and using a language only so far as it gets you want you want. I've actually spoken with a good number of farmers who do care about their English and even one whose English was terrible, but who had this remarkable understanding of how to make himself understood within his limitations. Those people I tend not to mock for their language.

The ones who are both unrepentant for being annoying shits and who act all injured when you tell them to fuck off, on the other hand, are fair game. They're already crying crocodile tears to try to get you to feel bad for them. It's no more mean-spirited to mock their English than to tell them to go die horribly in a car wreck or something. Which yeah, is mean, because it's supposed to be. But not any more insensitive.

Um, no, he meant "fuck your mom" but got tripped up on the translation due to the peculiarities of Mandarin, as I explained here. Maybe not as funny to most people when explained that way, but I still find it hilarious. Plus, I learned another phrase to insult the farmers: gan ni ma.
