XCache is a open-source opcode cacher, which means that it accelerates the performance of PHP on servers. It optimizes performance by removing the compilation time of PHP scripts by caching the compiled state of PHP scripts into the shm (RAM) and uses the compiled version straight from the RAM. This will increase the rate of page generation time by up to 5 times as it also optimizes many other aspects of php scripts and reduce serverload.

I'm not sure the problem outside of the possibly of needing a higher RPM drive or a RAID solution. I'm also exploring the possibility that mySQL could be configured more efficiently. I believe most large forums use a separate machine to host the SQL server (because of its HD dependencies) but that's not really financially feasible here.

while i cant help you out with details or solutions, you could/should check out, whether you get mysql to keep more things cached in memory. and ive read multiple times to avoid mysql at all costs when it comes to a large number of page hits. i dunno how much youre into it or whether you want to invest the time, but postgreSQL was always suggested as a substitute
