Re: Kudos points?
I was once a member of a "contentious" forum and they had a reputation system that went something like this...
It took 50 votes up or down to reflect on the user's profile. When that happen, there was a single bubble out of 5 that was either red or green (iirc). This way, to even register as having any karma you'd have to 1) Inspire several people to want to cast a vote for you. 2) 50 people either for or against you would have to have their say.
If you got 50 ups and 50 downs, you registered as "neutral." So, while someone may be on a "I hate every poster" rage and down karma anyone they don't like, 50 different users would have to say the same about you before it registered.
Incidently, it was on a board like this one. I think it was called reputation or karma.
50 is a lot, but this site had several hundred members over several years. I'm sure whatever feature it was has a level of customization.
Or... like... what Nurta said.

Re: Kudos points?
My old server forum also had a reputation system. They made it so the level of your reputation affected how much you changed another players rep. Mods had automatic max positive reputation (or in the case of one of them, he set himself to max negative lol), so any time they did any reps, it affected it alot, but anyone who had neutral or negative reps would not affect it much. Also, they kept it anon, and allowed you to leave a comment with your rep. Every once in a while, they "awarded" the board with 1-4 hours of non-anonyminity, so you could see who left certain comments for you (very fun and funny lol).
They also limited it so you could not leave rep for someone unless you had left rep for at least 3 other people that you hadn't repped recently.
I liked it, and while at first it was rough, and there was alot of "dotting" (the nickname it was given) it eventually evened out.

Re: Kudos points?
Oh yeah and to prevent someone from abusing the rep system they can't ding you over and over for negative or positive. For example if I hated your guts I couldn't just keep giving you bad rep I would have to spread my reputation around some before I could return to that person and even then I still think there is some ability to limit how many in a time frame can be given.
There are lots of good ideas here and I think it shows how extremely adaptable vBulletin is. Something else we have on ayro is a vBookie system. We can basically bet on sporting events, or other events that would inspire a bet. Each member gets a certain amount of vCash to bet with. It's just another fun thing to do, you can also add a photo album and allow various permissions to keep random posters who aren't registered to be able to see it.
I must say, one of the things that made me happy about this site was in fact, the use of vBulletin b/c I hate SoE's board software. GL!

Re: Kudos points?
Calthine there is an extensive user ratings system built into this vBulletin software that will do exactly what Nurta described. If you feel comfortable taking a look at doing what she describes and are interested, go for it. Otherwise, I'll try and check this out in more detail "soon". It will involve some figuring out.

I expect what will happen to some extent on this board is that we will get groups of people who tend to think alike, maybe they are in the same guild, or are hardcore raiders, or are NGD-type posters. When one of those posters says anything, someone from the opposite camp will say something in opposition to that, then both sides will jump in and support their boy. My point is, why even have a rating system on a board like this, because the same people will "max rate" and "min rate" the same other people in each and every post they make.

That would leave me with all the good kudos and everybody else with the evil kudos, cuz I'm so innocuous nobody ever pays me any mind? Let's do it!!!

Re: Kudos points?
I'm up to my pointy ears in RL today, but thanks for reminding me, I'll take a look and see what I think, and how it might be implimented. I rather like the idea that it takes multiple "votes" to change your rep.
But atm I'm making hubby move boxes in and out of the crawl space, and I have to nag him some more.

Re: Kudos points?
Not applicable to this situation but I was in an early EQ2 guild that used a Kudos / Karma system for members based on in-game guild contributions (cash, time, organising events etc). A friend with max points got into a disagreement with one of the guild founders on the forums and she ended up in some sort of venom spewing psycho bitch mode and reset his total to zero. A number of us compained that was not fair minded but she and her husband would not change it back. Right there 10 or 12 players left the guild and it broke up.
These systems are OK if not open to abuse. It looks like you guys are taking this kind of stuff into account anyway. If done well, it could be a cool addition to the site.
Pro.
