Who Came Up with these Spell Names?
I can understand the challenge in coming up with multiple different, but similar spell names for the numerous upgraded versions of all the spells and CAs in EQ2. But holy crap, who came up with some of these? And am I the only one a little disappointed by the lack of creativity?
- I mean “Ring of Fire” to "Sunrise”? This spell sounds like it should now help wake the mob up and be accompanied by a hot cup of coffee and a newspaper rather than an AE that is meant to sear the flesh off anything that tries to melee us…lol, ok it doesn’t do that much damage and isn’t the most useful spell, but come on, Sunrise?
- How about “Autumn’s Kiss”? I can’t speak for anyone else, but I have no desire to throw any kind of kiss on the mages I’m charged with keeping alive.
- Now “Ball Lightning” is almost ok, except I fail to understand why they didn’t include the “of”. Maybe it’s just me, but “Ball of Lightning” sounds so much cleaner.
- And one last laugh (for me at least) is the downhill name progression from “Back into the Fray” to “Return to the Pack”. Great spell but sure sounds like we digressed. “Ouch you got hammered, here’s a heal now get back in there and kill” to “Oh that looks like it hurt, here’s a Barney Band-Aid, now you should run for your life back to mommy.”
Not all our T8 spells are poorly named and I know this is just semantics, but when I first saw some of the 71-80 fury spell names, I had to laugh.
Safe Journeys.

There's a story behind that one. It happened at FF. If you want to know, PM me.

Um... I'm more than a little hesitant, but I'll give the basics. While I was at FF, I made friends with several of the devs, Lockeye being one. He was finishing up his last month with SOE at the time and still had several spells that he had to come up with names for. One was the upgrade to Ring of Fire. He named it for me, "Sunrise" is part of the username that I use nearly everywhere. So there it is. My favorite spell, named for me. /blush

Personally, I think the porno resembling rezzes are better.
However, of all of the things to bitch about, I don't really see many problems with the names. Sorta.
Autumn's Kiss is like the calm before the storm of winter, which gravitates more towards death as opposed to the alternate spring/summer. You would think that which replenishes life would be more inclined to a season which nourishes it. Having said that, for pagan/druid types, very important times/events fall near the autumnal equinox, so I guess I can see where the 'Autumn's Kiss' can still hold some relevance.
As far as sunrise, I can see it as maybe represeting the ultimate vanquisher of the evil night, or rather, many of the things that go bump in it. I also think this should be doing more damage for its ideal.
And ball lightening... Well, I honestly would have preferred 'Wrath of the Gods' for this one, with some magnificent super effects and higher end damage, but we get what we get and furies are the forerunners of the storm. So it makes sense. However, Ball -of- Lightening does sound better.
Return to the pack (sorta) makes sense as well. Its the means to bring the fallen ally back into group, to hunt together (ie. raid :p) However, the wolf form ability is not the sole representation of the fury, it actually is more feline (which I am not thrilled about to this day) so maybe we should call it 'Return to the Pride'.
Either way, the names are what they are, no one is gonna like all of them, but at least they could have been alot worse.
On a side note, I either have too much of an imagination, or I should simply not respond to any thread when I am still half asleep. And for the record, I have never thought of any of my heals as Barney Bandaids, but now I am probably going to giggle in raids for a while.

Our next upgrade to Lightning Bolt will be called "Big Magic Nuke", true story.

Aye, I meant this post as something to laugh about, not really bitch. I'm more concerned with mechanics of the game than I am of spell names, but a number of them struck me as amusing and was curious if I was the only one. Some of the thoughts and info on the various names were very good, thanks. Personally, I'm still laughing about Sunrise (thanks Raevin /glare).
Safe journeys all.

You bring up a good point. Too many of our spells lack a sexual reference. However, my spineskin macro holds strong, "Spahnlie is making %t very thorney" ^.^
