Default A couple of raiding questions

I'm just getting back into playing after a long haitus and started raiding with a fury for the first time. I've read through a lot of the responses here and gotten some great information, but still have a few questions:

    1. I use the default UI (I know but I'm just so used to it), is there any top of add-on UI element to see the mob's cast bar a little bigger so I can work on the precuring thing? I plan to give profit a shot when I have time to sit down and organize it, unless someone has a suggestion on a better UI or just add on UI pieces that are helpful.

    2. Melee vs. ranged-I'm solo in the mage group, how many of you actually spec for melee vs. ranged spell casting and is it worth it?

    3. I think my cures are slow because of missing precuring (goes back to the UI). Any other suggestions on curing faster? Also, I hate to admit it but I'm just not sure when to cast the raidwide cure-Is it learning the timing on specific fights or do you normally cast it at a certain time? I'm finding myself trying not to "waste" it because of the long recast but then not using it because I tried to save it.

    4. Protective instinct vs. Howling with the pack-Is there an advantage to one over the other and which do you prefer?

    Thanks.

    1. I believe you can get a standalong casting bar try eq2interface
    2. I'm duel spec'd if its a progression mob I stay out and range but on fights like Melanie Everling I'm in meleeing, every fury you ask this will give you a different answer tbh, get a mirror and make a 2nd set of adorns, reforge, etc and keep experimenting till you find what works for you
    3. Pretty much most people pre-cure so once you get that casting bar you should see a difference
    4. Personally i'm on board with howling, stun/stifle immunity, personal DR and heals for your group - "oh look the necro is about to lifeburn /af macro /howling keep dpsing" but then again PI is useful on mobs that hit for more hp than your mages have so again its down to personal preferance, try both and see which you prefer.

If you are comfortable with and like the default UI, I may suggest DRUMS UI since it gives me the same feeling. Plus it gives a spell timer window where you cant track up to like 15 spells per character. It is ossom to get no matter what UI you end up picking.

1.) i started using profit in TSO and havent looked back. was a big adjustment but i like the clean lines, tbh.

2.) i've never really been melee spec, but like Rosvita said, it's personal preference and playstyle. i'll melee on burn fights, but other than that, i range

3.) i use raid-wide cure as a breaker for stun/stifle or fear if I've used everything else up already. it's kinda an oh-shit spell for me... it's wasted if you just keep saving it and saving it. i also use it on trash mob encounters w/ aoes that stack, like in ST. ...or in the rare occasion that several healers are down across multiple groups and aoes hit, it obviously comes in handy.

if you feel like you're abnormally slow on cures, make sure your casting speed is capped precuring is usually the way to go, but there are aoes that interrupt so you don't have that option. i also recommend using a mouse with extra buttons near your thumb/fingers so you can use those to cure quickly...i found it made a huge difference for me when i finally switched - also make sure that you have /cancel spellcast or whatever the command is for your group cure macros; which you probably already have but /shrug.

4.) i prefer howling because of the stun/stifle/fear immunity... when you're solo healing, honestly i always want something available to click on. it's pretty easy to cycle through howling, serenity, tshell and pots/signets. i found it hard to adjust to using protective instinct effectively and i missed the extra breaker so i switched back to howling.

I'd also suggest drums over profit, better support, better looking, and more user friendly.

I like drums better personally. not as flashy with all the stuff I need. I'd post more but in the middle of moving atm. Except Protective > howling imo. I've been fuckin around with howling again lately but going to be switching back.

Oh btw stand alone casting bar - dx2 casting bar from eq2 interface. Large, easy to see & configure. I used it before drums got one

Not to mention Ive found that if you have any lag issues, Profit's stats bar can lag you more, particularly if you are on an older machine.

    1. dx2 npc casting bar @ eq2interface.com

    2. Whichever fits your playstyle. Study and know all the encounters, and you will find that both are used for certain situations.

    3. DrumsUI or ProfitUI are the popular ones. DarqUI is a third I've heard some about.

    4. PI > Howl for me. Wards across the group is just better than personal damage reduction, and Serenity + Stun/Stifle runes is all the immunity you need.
