They stopped doing shiny coins tho - and do stuff like add different freebies for DD vs Retail box.
I know DoF had paintings for DD and the djinn bottle and some scrying stone for Retail. Kind of a drag if you want to collect stuff...
I always preorder Retail box from EB games, and they have always had it for pickup on my way home from work the day the expansion goes live.

How does SoE know that you pre-ordered through retail? DoF is the only expansion I've gotten something tangible for pre-ordering, if you don't count my copy having a pre-order-reserve-slip taped to the front.

I haven't a clue as to how the specifics work, but the pre-order works the same regardless of who you get it from.
By tangible, I meant the physical items that come with the box; usually a map, CDs or DVDs, manual, and sometimes a little trinket.

Living in Norway, I finally found it on a danish website which shipped cheaply to Norway, but they had to order it in from somewhere else, so it took about 2 months before I got it...
I was just about to give up and demand my money back when I got the damn game. This was for a second account obviously, my main one I got digital download on as I can't be arsed to wait that long. I just found it a bit more reasonable to get the retail for EoF than buying the base game and 3 expansions over digital download which at the time would've cost me at least 3 times as much.

While there isn't any way for SOE to tell a specific person preordered retail, stores usually tell the company how many preorders they have so they know how many boxes to send. Most of the time the company just makes a certian number of boxes with the bonus included or ships seperate CDs to the store, which are then supposed to be handed out when the person comes to pick up their preorder. Sometimes the stores will get the bonus materials a week or more before they actually get the game itself. It's usually possible to get the bonus without preordering, because stores often get more bonuses than they have preorders and just give them out to whoever buys the game whether they preordered or not.

Re: Retail Box vs. Digital Download
Why would I be pissed? If I'd waited for rok to get any of the expansions or APs, I'd be sitting at 0 aa, and I'm not even sure which zones I wouldn't have been allowed into. Isle of mara for sure, I like killing cheldrak and the crab. Hargraves trial was almost worth the price of the splitpaw ap by itself.

might be the case if you want to have your expansion really soon, but the original game i just bought in the store.
All the expansions i just ordered over the internet.
So not that hard to get a boxed version, although i do need to remember where i bought the last one cause the shipped for free

Why would anyone be pissed? Older releases have less to no value, so they get tossed in as a bonus to encourage people to buy. I'd be pissed if they continued to sell them separately as no new player is gonna want to buy all those.
