When you dish out the excuses, people see through it anyway - as guild leaders and officers, raid leaders, etc. we've heard all the excuses before.
You can be direct and still be tactful about it. "You guys are great & I've enjoyed my time with you, but I need more out of the game" works much better than an excuse that they see through, or people find out later was bogus.

Couldn't agree more - As a guild leader I've seen my fair share of people leaving for other guilds who wanted to achieve more than we were.
I have remained friends with, and maintained respect for those who were honest with us - who told us they wanted more than we could give.
The ones I still have trouble even sparing a civil word to, are the ones who pulled stunts like claiming illnes to get out of our raid, and then going off and raiding with another guild they were looking to join. Or the ones who swore blind they were committed to our guild and were not thinking of leaving - right up until 2 hours before they left to join another guild.
What's that saying about not crapping on people on your way up the ladder, coz you never know when your success/happiness may be in the hands of those people in the future? So true.....
