Default Passion for your class...

Does anyone have a real passion for the class they play?

Do you feel so well represented and acomodated by your class as represented by SOE in EQ2 that you actually care about it.

I'm bored as most are leading upto an expansion and got to thinking about my class (Illusionist, although i frequent the SK forums too, as i do still like my old main). I just don't give a shit is what it boils down to.

I've played many classes (almost all) and have four level 70 toons. The ones that made it to 70 aren't necessarily the ones i like the most, just one of each archtype that i felt was useful enough to be worth getting to 70.

I still consider EQ2 to be one of the better MMORPGs out there, its certainly the only one i've been able to get into enough to dedicate this much time and effort to . But something about this game and its classes leaves me constantly wanting something else.

I can't really put my finger on what irritates me about the classes or EQ2 as a whole.

Just wondering if anyone else has this detatchment from the classes they play, no matter how much they try to... welll to give a shit about it.

Or on the flipside if someone/anyone even has that passion that i clearly lack.

I dirge, and love it. Every part of it.

I love trying to do dps to counter the weakness of low dps.
I love bragging of our utility
I love soloing stuff at the egde of possibilities, that normally only ubersolo classes can. (or mostly die while trying)

I love droping my ZW's to save the raid with some quick rezzes. Or tossing a fast heal + mend shield (currently not specced for it) and feel you really mattered (eventhough its not all that).

I love being in a group and getting tells with : I want this buff, no i want that buff.

I love twisting buffs in and out when in MT group to max usabilitie. (spell consolidation FTL.)

I love changing order of debuffs (or dropping some debuffs) depending on the fight.

In general I love it that being a dirge forces me to think on what I do and when I should do it.

I've figured it out, and I'm just passing the time here waiting for someone else in the industry to figure it out too, so I can reward them instead of breathing new life into this corpse and the gremlins who nibble off of it. Jaded much.

For me, it would be too many classes in the game from the start. They could have easily done "class diversity" with AP lines to help with balance and trying to mix and match for raid setups.

I have a swashy that I put all of my time, effort, and plat into to making him the best he can be for raiding. I've dabbled with a brigand and assassin, but I'll never raid with them and gear them up with fabled gear. They'll be lucky to get legendary/player-made once I get my main toon capped out on level, AP points, tradeskill, and tinkering.

I had an immense passion for my Defiler. I think it had to do with all the issues the class had at launch that made me love it even more. I have tried other classes, but none touch my love of my Defiler. I have recently found a new passion with my Biotech/Medic in Tabula Rasa. Played most of the classes during beta but always came back to my biotech. I can't wait to level her!

But I know what you mean about lack of passion. Thats one of the reasons I left WOW, no matter how I tried I just couldnt love that Lvl 70 priest I had. I think the passion for our class plays a huge part in our enjoyment of a game. If I have none, I usually leave the game sooner rather than later.

I don't mean a passion to play it, or to fix broken mechanics/balance etc.

e.g. you're a Drige, do you feel the Drige concept is cool? do you like how its protrayed, do you feel your class does what it should (buff, rez, health transfer, damage... i only refer to the WHAT not how well).

or do you feel someone somewhere said:

Perhaps coming from a pen and paper RPG background i want to make the classes and characters i play more personal and simply can't. I do feel it's more than this though, or i wouldn't have posted ;)

I Play ranger its been my only raiding main and i like the idea of a ranger but not quite how soe would like me to be as a ranger. However if your raid alot its alot of same old same old. This makes playing the game quite mundane to say the least.

Lately i've taken time to run with a bruiser and actually read the scripts of the quests i'm doing and enjoy the quests. There's two games here one is raiding must top parse must top parse DPS DPS DPS DPS and get fabled loot. The other is a quest game. The quest game isn't too bad tbh. Lots of quests and things to pick up on..

However as your original question was do you have a passion for your class i'd say yes if i'm raiding on ranger .. yes if i'm grouping soloing on bruiser. I've a 70 illusionist and hate it just not my sort of thing. I do wish i had a mystic as well.

Edit : spelling ( still probably lots of mistakes)

Everyone RUSHES to lvl 70 these days when its simply a game to be enjoyed imo.

Default Re: Passion for your class...

I started an assassin from the start and havent played any other classes past lvl 20. Its the only class that really fits my playstyle and the only one I care to do anything with. Playing my assassin is one of the only things that I find fun in this game, besides conquering new content. All the other classes I tried are boring imo.

I think the problem is lack of uniqueness in each class. Basically ever assassin is the same as every other assassin as far as specs go. The same is true for all the other classes. There is generally one best path to take each class and so everyone specs that way. There is no freedom to make the character unique and still be able to compete with others in the class. This will become even more apparent when they add the 40 AAs in RoK.

There is no thrill is speccing a character to take advantage of certain situations because for the most part it doesnt matter. I could really get into my character if I had the freedom to make it truly unique.

I agree that there shouldve been fewer classes and more AP paths. That way I could be an assassin who specializes in single target DPS or one who does more AE damage, I could sacrifice DPS for utility etc. Right now we play classes cut out with a cookie cutter, theres not a lot of difference or the possibility of difference between two characters of the same class.

There is nothing more personal in a toon than the player playing it.
My first main was a monk, she sucked for me, altho I still find the class enjoyable.
My dirge is special to me as well, I love getting love letters because of the way I play her. even tho she isnt my main and probably wont get to 80 soon let alone getting geared in fabled gear, im still a damned good dirge with how and when i use abilities like what was previously said in this thread.
My main now is a templar. I <3 her, theres nothing that pleases me more to know that im a gd good templar and can do stuff other templars cant even with the same gear/ ect. For no other reason than that I have spent my time getting to know ALL her utilities and not just becoming a heal bot.
You are what makes your toon what it is, not the gear or the fluff soe makes available to you. If you want to be more original, then do so with the way you play it.
Or you can play the way yoru told to play because it's "the way it's supposed to be played" becoming yet again just another one of your class
But then again, maybe thats just personal opinion
