And you dont have to be some dipshit goth or pussy emo to take a little time aside to celebrate and remember.
All Saint's Day is just the christian version of a much older practice.
Commercial Halloween is to Samhain what the Easter Bunny is to the Resurrection.
(And I wont even go in to why cristianity picked THAT particular time of year)

FWIW Christainity and most Diefied religions have holidays that parallel many of the traditional pagan holidays of the dark ages. And I would have to agree with you on why the Christains chose to pick the same timeframe as Fertility. I think is was the Roman Catholics way of squashing the Pagan holiday that is associated with the Vernal Equinox. The resurrection as well as birth of christ did not happen when Christainity claims. The audit or census imposed by the roman empire at the time of Christ's birth was decreed in the Fall.
Unfortunately, Christianity's early beginnings are filled with brutality towards the pagan faiths of the world. The Inquisition is a perfect example of one faith forcing their belief on others. Many faiths fled Europe to escape the religious persecution imposed by the catholics. Another fine example of brutality would be The Crusades (i.e. go kill all the muslim fanatics because they do not believe in our One true God) The flip side of that coin is the many Jihad against the "Imperialist west".
The fundamental flaw with many religions is that they are practiced by Tyrants who feel their belief is the one true "Cure all Fix all for humanity"
Examples of various holidays:
Halloween = Samhain = All Saints = Dia de los Muertos
Christmas = Winter Gathering = Hanakah (sic)
Easter also parallels the paganists' Celebration of Fertility (thus the easter bunny)
