My suggestion was a for some races to get a direct heal in place of their race defining damage spell.

I play a level 70 half elf troub right now. I want the half elf to the best choice for either bard but I am not sure what to give them. The direct heal would be nice but so would an additional mez or ranged attack.

The ratonga raid tank is still fine. I remember back in eq I was in a guild with a wood elf warrior as the raid tank in a game dominated by ogre, troll and barbarian tanks. Those races had huge advantages with frontal stun immunity. The wood elf still did well though at high end raids and in my opinion was one of the better tanks I met in that game. He was just really good at that class and thats all that mattered.

The same holds true today. Sure the ogre gets some stun immunity but its not going to suddenly make your raids win a fight or anything. The extra hit points the tanking races got looks nice on paper but they were already getting that in the past anyways so nothing has really changed in that regard.

I think they had a server wide warrior pvp type battle and one of the top 3 was a wood elf in eq1.

I had a thought, would it be so bad for the races with % ranged crit to also get + melee crit? It's not like you can be doing both at the same time. I think a lot of wood elf melee classes feel pretty crummy about their racials.
