can you just spam dura, keep the combine going for an hour, and get level increases that way, like you can with regular tradeskills?

Use to be able to, but you can't do that anymore .. chance of skillup on completion (seems very low, even at skill 10 unless its broken) ...
You also just get four conters, two durability, two progress. One requires power, other one decreases success chance, so theres no pair that decreases durability or vice versa. |

Ummm, shoot, they changed stuff often enough...
Last I recall is Transmuting would give you a not enough skill message. And Tinkering has recipes books scribable by skill.

I'll cry bullshit on that. Sages have more recipes than anyone in the game, and they STILL got adornments. All main TS classes got Adornments.
