I own a business in the technical service industry and if someone gets pissy, they may feel free to calm down and call back when they wish to handle the issues in an adult manner. I too own/run a business. Let me tell you when dealing with patients dental insurance, they get pissed. And its ok to be pissed, but as soon as you become offensive or beligerent to me, the Dr. or my staff, I show you the door. I just wont tolerate it, even to the point of threatening to call the 5.0 when some bozo was overtly rude, and wouldnt leave after being told to. I will however go the extra mile with patients that have issues with billing or insurance that are NICE, or at the very least polite. Trust me there is me doing my job (ie filing insurance) and doint more by filing it, following it up, contacting them by phone, making sure the check was sent ect. I dont have to do the latter. Their insurance is THEIR insurance, I file it as a courtsey.

I work CS/Sales for a major credit card company. Nobody calls their credit card company because they're completely content. So, one can imagine all the pleasant people I get to talk to during my shift. :/
By nature, people call for two reasons when they are angry. 1. They just want to vent. And, a little sympathy will usually defuse them quickly. or 2. They don't understand. Explaining the issue to them in layman's terms will defuse these situations as well.
When somebody gets irate and attacks me personally and refuses to act professional after several warnings. I just close their account and say "Ok, Mr. Smith.. all taken care of. You will never ever receive another rate increase from us again. Was there anything else I could help you with today? Oh.. btw.. every purchase you've authorized in the past 12 ours is going to be declined. Have a great evening!"
