I think the sensible money would be on the guess that there will never be a fundamental change to EQ2. Rather that it will continue its inexorable slide towards compatibility with the mindeset of those that think WoW is challenging. The game is too "long in the tooth", to be changed too much other than by tinkering around the edges. The "fundamental" change will only come with EQ3 (hopefully NOT called that though) and will probably take the form of some chymeric hybrid between Everquest and Vanguard......why else would SOE have taken over the responsibility of the latter otherwise?

Funny thing is, raiding in WoW takes more skill than in EQ2. Go figure.

There are group instances that require more thought than a lot of EQ2 raids.

I suppose that as you can get to level cap in about a month, no sweat, and get into full time raiding then your point is relevant. For many though the game used to be so much more than JUST raiding. For those the game has lost SO much depth and complexity over the years.

In what way? What mechanics or design elements are there that make these zones and raids challenging?

This is why I play FPS. They may always be the same content, but there is always a challenge depending on who is online ^_^

Fights are not just tank and spank. They aren't made challenging by a mob hitting hard. Bosskillers World of Warcraft Bosses, Guides, Movie Reviews and Guild Kills Go to that site, look over a few of the fights in WoW, then tell me SOE doesn't need to get their shit together.

If you really want to see "innovation", look at the fights in Mt. Hyjal. and Black Temple.

I know its cool or whatever to talk shit about WoW players on sites for other MMOs, but it's not all that well-deserved. There's 10 million players now, so sure, there are some 10 year olds and some complete tards, but those people don't raid. The raiding population of WoW has accomplished things that the EQ2 raiding population would have to spend weeks figuring out. Not that they're any less stupid, but it took WoW players that long to figure out certain fights too. Not to mention, raiding in EQ2 is a fucking joke.

Looking over the fights, they do not seem hugely different from EQ2 raid encounters, although the WoW encounters to seem to have a larger volume of abilities. This, however, seems more stylistic than substantive in that none of the abilities seem much different from the sort of thing one will find in EQ2.
