Note in a sole proprietorship one does not need to remove the money from the business to be taxed on it.
How can anyone say that this doesn't have the potential to impact them is beyond me. As for it happening now, as long as SoE disallows it via the EULA and it is thus not a condoned part of the game, the IRS can not go after the legitimate players, once SoE legitimizes this, that protection goes out the window and it will be a matter of time before the IRS steps in to take it's cut in some way. That much you can count on.

Everything anyone owns has potential value, but I don't see the IRS going after baseball cards and comic books, despite the fact that those items are regularly traded and sold, some for many thousands of dollars.

Re: SOE Licenses 3rd Party RMT Company for In Game Virtual Property Sales
They had originally hoped to make all EQ2 servers SE. Then they got a little nervous and gave that poll in 2005. It let the players vote on wheter or not to have SE on their server. Since they opened two new servers instead, I'm assuming that the vote was very much against it.
I don't think that they'll touch the non-SE server with this for the moment. Don't think that if revenue drops from the game due to lack of interest of players, they'd hesitate to implement it in a heart beat if they thought it would squeeze more cash.
I think that major focus with this is their up and coming projects. That Freeworld crap...

Not sure if its still the case but when i left euros were unable to sell stuff on exchange for that exact reason. They didn't know how to handle taxes. Would that mean that if the game introduces RMT on a larger scale they would have to have localized versions not only for each language but also for each country to allow the use of RMT?
/edit
That was in response to Jalathan's thread btw, a few people got in between while writing :D

Kinda makes me wonder what kind of profit they're turning on the SE servers in comparison with the non-SE.
Maybe they see SE as a successful experiment they want to replicate.

Your sadly mistaken if you believe thats the reason for their success. Take the time and actually play WoW, then go raid their xpac and compare it to RoK, or even the best raids EoF had to offer. It's night and day. The majority of issues in this game are non-existent there.

Of the 9 million players in WoW, how many of them raid? How many have raided in multiple games, and can actually make a comparison between them?

Now your just being a fanboi. I have tried both and I can honestly say WoW is a much more polished, thought out, and functional game in terms of Solo, Grouping, PvP, and Raiding. Eq2 has player housing.

I'm sure the companies with huge followings like blizzard and valve got that way just through social networking and not becuase their games come out super polished. You must be right.

You are approaching it form the perspective of an experienced gamer who is looking for things like raid progression and polish, not a first time gamer who's friend told him to check out WoW.
