I think that if they want to make it succeed they will have to invent more stuff to sell thats important enough for people to buy with RL credit.

I seriously hope they will never consider something as radical as that....but anything is possible.

This part I will agree with. The success and rampant growth of the illicit RMT websites doesn't happen without a lot of demand signal coming in. Simple logic dictates that either a few people are buying a lot of plat (unlikely), or a lot of people are buying a few plat (likely). Either way there seems to be a great deal of money cycling through these websites.

This part I will only partly agree with. You can pretty easily deduce who's buying plat and who is obtaining it legitimately. For instance, I have about 500p in the bank right now between my characters. I've cycled through probably about 1k-1500 more plat on top of that in the last year between all my characters. All of that was obtained legitimately. How? Figure that shit out yourself, successful people don't give away secrets for free. It's not that hard to figure out how to make money in game if you're enterprising. ;)

Wouldn't a next step be for SOE to authorize the RMT company to sell "no trade" items directly? I could honestly see that happening, skip the micro-transactions and go straight for the big dollars. Would have to be pricey enough to discourage very many from entering the market, but cheap enough so they moved a few pieces.

Silkroad online is decent.

RMT already exists in EQ2. its caleld lon and you dont have to buy 10000 boosters to get what you want. you'll notice their are people trading in game loot cards for boosters.
