Our guild is growing with a number of new players coming in from WOW. From my limited viewpoint, EQ2 is doing well.

I think they will straighten out the issues that the raiders are having. Problems in EQ2 may seem to hang around a long time, but compared to other MMOs I have played, they get fixed at lightning speed.

I've level 7 toons from 1-40, and I really like the variety. If you get tired in Antonica, head to CL. If you get tired there, head to EoF or TD.

I find that quote a little humorous considering relatively recent events.

I would bet my house on the game they come up with.

GMG may be a great place to work, but I'll wait and see what sort of game they can actually come up with. There's a lot more to making good games than having a good workplace environment.

These independent ventures would be a good place to see if bringing in QA and management people from outside the MMO/gaming industry will actually improve things.

I heard that 3D Realms is an awesome place to work. No rush. As much as creative freedom as needed for the devs.

Of course, when was Duke Nukem Forever suppose to come out?

Great place to work != always mean great games

Absolutely. The funny thing is they are coming from the total opposite end of the scale - starting with no mmorpg experience, with a solid management structure and solid business processes.

Add to that McFarlane and Salvatore being at the centre of creating the world and the characters and it is mouth watering.

If it doesn't work out I'll just have to admit I'm wro.. wro... w.. wron..

I'm wr .. wro .. wr.. wro

Fuck, I just can't do it. It's a curse.

First - a game world created by those folks DOES sound appealing. I'm certain I will watch for it, because my favorite genre is high fantasy (I have little to no interest in spy themed MMO's or whatever)....

SECOND - and I KNOW I'm dating myself here - but that whole "I'm wr.. wro... wr.. wro..." bit... I immediately pictured Fonzie from happy days.

Yeah, that has lots of potential, but so did Vanguard.

I just hope you people aren't wrong about Warhammer because an old coworker of mine is working on it. (I guess if I find out about him getting a new job, I can give y'all a warning.)

No comparison whatsoever can be drawn between GMG and Vanguard. Sigil had a QA department of 2 people - one was a GM and the other was an ex chef.

A friend of mine is heading up CR for Warhammer, funnily enough. The jammy bastard is on holiday in Vegas and just won enough on the poker tables to pay for his two week trip across the States (we're UK based).

Best wishes aren't proof of competence. I still need to see what they are producing.

Couple of folks have quoted the Schilling quote, but if you look back at my post that was an aside about his attitude to the company.

The proof of competence was in the previous sentence, linking to their company :

I didn't have any inside information; just what is in the public domain about the type of people they are recruiting and their management structure. Check out their website and look at the Team and Jobs section for a small taste of that.

Bringing in people from outside the industry, is the exact point this whole thread has been about; people like Bill Thomas as Chief Operating Officer from outside of the industry and Brett Close from the fringe of it. All they need to show me is a commitment to quality management (and instinctively, everything in the company stinks of it) and I'm convinced they have a winning team.

Thats the exact focus of what I've been trying to say in this thread. I've run teams like this in IT projects of a similar scale to an MMORPG development in the merchant banking industry, so I know what I'm talking about. Now that WoW has made MMORPG development a truly corporate exercise, anything that shows any less commitment to excellence is going to fall by the wayside.

The whole point of this is, it frees up the developers, designers and artists to do their best work and to have it scheduled properly. And, as everyone has agreed, building upon the creations of Salvatore and McFarlane is mouth watering.
