I generally found melee heavy groups more efficient than caster groups myself.

For my top xp group it would probably be

Assassin (me)
Fury
Dirge
Brigand
Conjuror

Would swap out a few classes here and there depending on what I was doing but the mix of debuffs and pure DPS make it one of my favorite xp groups.

Thats a reasonable level of survivability and utility without loosing too much dps. You could go with a zerker MT but Im not sure what they do with all their power, I mean where does it all go??

Oh and if I chanced across loads of yellow ^^^ (al la giants field) then I would have to go with

we have a tank specced brigand in our guild and he is a really impressive xp tank also. Stuff dies fast and with just 4 of us we all get more xp.

That's a good question. Power cost is high, lots of dps, and taunts

Now with some good hategen I can get away with not taunting much if at all but with a battery (chanter) it's non stop pulling even with the high power usage for a zerker

Guards can literally just sit there and hold agro cause were as their reactive taunt hits 50 pct of the time a zerker is only 20 pct of the time but adds dmg as well as a taunt so yea...mana sucks for a zerker

For KoS I went with:

Bruiser

Swashbuckler
Dirge
Defiler
Templar/Warden/assassin depending who was on

Say what you want about 2 healers, but you need them when the brawler is pulling 3-4 mobs, the swashbuckler 2-3 and the conjuror another 3 at all times for 12+ hours straighting with literally no time when there werent multiple mobs in camp.

Edit - But anyways, a swashbuckler is a must for a good xp group. They can dps ae mobs as well or better than anyone and tank. They rock.

Grinded to 70 with:

Coercer
Bruiser
Fury
Assassin
Brigand
Paladin

Sometimes the Bruiser was switched out with a Ranger, and as we got to 65+ I just solo healed myself most of the time.....with the Coercer just locking down fight after fight in SoS, you could totally own whole floors.

There was just way too much dps to need another healer (especially with me getting my master heals right away)
