Re: WTF is with this game
I think the the solo quests are a good addition, but there you go. If your only complaint is that they're too easy then I have a suggestion for you - do something harder. This may not have occured to you, but quests are optional. I know, as crazy as it seems, you don't have to do the stuff you seemingly hate so much.
I suggest that if you're going to complain about the game this much then go back to where you came from.
Remember, the keyword is choice.

His problem is not about these quests being too easy, it's about these quests being too rewarding for how easy they are. Not the same thing.
edit: after rereading, you are right, he's complaining about how easy it is, but I don't think he'd be complaining if it wasn't that rewarding and the best way to make xp. Easy solo quests that give almost nothing always existed and no one ever complained about it.

Re: WTF is with this game
Ok just my opinion
1st expansion
DOF, HUGE class nerfs and large amount of super tough mobs. Zone that required you get a good group to navigate through and a zone where you still had to do access. Had to build up faction in maj to get stuff off vendor merchants. But still basically a handfull of zones.
catered major to people who grouped a ton and had the suppot to push forard.
KOS
Some pretty neat long drawn out with access quests. Plenty of nodes and lots of good gear for running instances.
Grous orientated but lil more solo content.
EOF,
instance zone class set armor. lots of solo quests and new noob area. 50-50 on solo vs group content.
ROK is a solo casual expansion that has stuff for people that like to group. The grind to level is 100% gone you can quest to 80 without ever having to grind at all.
No one expansion is the same. Nor should they be. What do people want? The same thing over and over again?
I do not. I want to see that they are trying to mix things up a li.
As you progress

A sense of direction.
You've gone from the game being group centric in 1 expansion (an MMO, go figure), to solo questing being the only viable way to level in another. Progress is not flip flopping the game's vision every expansion. Thats poor management.

Re: WTF is with this game
It's odd for me. I think I've been gone so long that although I know this is going on I still am really enjoying the game. In fact, I am finding myself actually tradeskilling something I hated beyond belief when I first played.
Does this mean I am accepting easy mode? /wrists

I spent RL days doing that, can't do it anymore.
Of course it helps that my accounts are cancelled, just wait until you get to KoS and decide to try the ungodly length questlines. Better have money to pay people to run around sanctum with you, nobody goes voluntarily. Took so long to get to the end of that quest that EoF was out, so I was off helping people with those quests most of the time and never getting back to mine. I knew what to do since I'd already done all the steps out of order, just had to try it all solo.
I was boxing four at one point, trying to make my own damned group to finish quests, but I found that I hated that more than just trying to train everywhere solo. Did make for some challenging fights, usually because I wasn't paying attention like I would playing one toon and I'd pull lots since I had the dps I didn't when soloing.

This assumes that the desires of the playerbase are fairly uniform and well-expressed, which is not at all the case.
Rather, devs are in a position where they must try and appeal to a playerbase with shifting, poorly-expressed and often contradictory wants. A consistent 'vision' is not going to work here - you'll simply lose too many players as you alienate different groups.
I also see a lot of people here exaggerating the shifts in direction - while RoK does feature more solo quests than prior expansions, it is hardly as solo-centric as some make it seem. Grouping is quite viable as a means to level, and there seem to be no shortage of groups heading to the various instances. I think the biggest problem was a lack of a solid, low-70s instance, so there was a period from about 70-75 where soloing was the only real way to advance, but now that more people are getting into the upper-70s, grouping is getting far more commonplace.

Well do they keep changing direction because they have a wide variety of a player base, or do they have a wide variety of a player base because they keep changing direction?

I think it is because in general, MMO players are looking for a wide variety of experiences, and enjoy many different playstyles. The raid-only or solo-only types are the distinct minority.
