Aye... the first couple years of EQ1.
I remember being a level 5 wizard and wondering what the huge white spires in Greater Faydark were for. Even more amazing was that fact that if you asked about them in OOC... NOBODY knew what they were for!
I had traveled from Qeynos to Kelethin, a monstrous undertaking for a level 5 wizard in 1999, at the request of some friends who had created all their characters in Gfay. I set off with a level 5 ranger and a level 6 bard from North Qeynos and it took us about 18 hours of insane adventuring and brutal deaths to finally arrive at the first lift in Kelethin. We literally cried tears of joy. (We were middle-aged adults too.)
Memorable to the trip were:
The first time I watched a barbarian shaman fighting a huge spider in West Karana.
The first Hill Giant I saw far off in the distance crossing North Karana. That made my jaw drop.
Crossing into East Karana across the wooden bridge at night and promptly getting charmed by an evil eye. That was a truly heart stopping encounter... I had NO idea what was happening and I actually hard-rebooted my PC in an attempt to get away as the eye slowly filled my screen, blocking out everything else, and the sound of a heartbeat gradually began to drown out the voices of my traveling companions on BattleCom. (VON software of that time)
Falling to my death in the darkness off the ramp leading up to Highhold Pass from East Karana.
The horrid deaths in Highhold attempting to get through, and finally being helped through the zone by some other friends that came to rescue us with the help of some higher levels that were camping orcs locally.
After that things went far better, and the irony about my wondering what those Gfay Spires were for is that eventually I became a wizard capable of teleporting a host of others to that point, saving them the agony of that very same trip.
But I tell you what, I would do the trip again in a heartbeat. Looking back, I didn't save those later travelers from horrors, I caused them to miss out on a wonderful adventure.
Too bad.
Happy Gaming,

Oh, and if you wonder how someone so naive at the time about EverQuest could have so many friends at level 5... I was part of an active clan playing Unreal and Unreal Tournament that decided to migrate over into the world of EQ at the nudging of a couple savvy clannies. I think about 12 of us joined EQ. I still have a couple today playing on my current server.
