Reversing eq2 files
Was wondering if anyone else is working on reversing some of the eq2 files? Or if some else has an open source eq2 inside kind of project on the go?
I've been able to open and pull out their different .dds, .hit, .draw, .sp, etc files but having an issue figuring out how to piece things together to make a maya or 3ds file to render their zones.
End product I'm looking to do is render darathar attacking the qeynos castle gate, etc. or something fun like that.
Just looking for someone who might have more info than I do and can point me in the right direction. pm me ...

Re: Reversing eq2 files
The term you're looking for is "reverse-engineering" and it isn't exactly encouraged. Lots of times zones are compiled from a common editable format into a custom super-optimized one, putting them out of your reach.

Re: Reversing eq2 files
I'm not messing with their source code, I'm pulling the texture, height maps, etc. out of the files and rendering my own thing. eg. red vs. blue .. if its against the law I'll stop but I don't think it is.

Re: Reversing eq2 files
I'd be surprised if it wasn't against the EULA, especially because zone data is always a way to search for exploits.

Re: Reversing eq2 files
I'm almost 100% certain that'd be a violation of their Intellectual Property rights, as stated in the EULA. I know private server versions are.
But I'm not gonna read all the fine print and make sure.

Re: Reversing eq2 files
It isnt illegal if you code the files, or something i forgot what it was called, but you cannot directly copy the files and make a private server

Re: Reversing eq2 files
Private servers? This is so far beyond what hes doing I wonder if you guys even read the OP.
I looked into this a couple months ago and couldn't find what you are looking for, but I didn't try very hard. If you are persistent, the guys who can really help you are over on the eq2interface forums.

Re: Reversing eq2 files
that would be infinitely more complicated than necessary
hes talking about just lining up models in 3dsm or maya so it "looks" in game
