I agree it's unavoidable, and it happens every time there are more than 3 people trying to sell the products of a tradeskill class in the market.
The worst I ever saw was T7 provisioning - at its worst, and still to this day on my server, you can buy food and drink for much less than the cost of raws and fuel. Lol, I have a 70 prov and I buy my food and drink on the market because that is cheaper than making it myself.
That's why common sense also dictates being first to market, selling profitably for as long as possible, taking the lion's share of profit from the market before the undercutters arrive, then dropping the market on the undercutters with a bomb by lowering prices on my remaining inventory to cost while I'm exiting the market. And then they can fight over the bones and play the losing battle of trying to sell things at cost or just a tiny profit.
BTW, with all the plat I made this expansion on transmuting (600+ p over and above my investment in leveling), I never charged more than a 33% markup, approximately. I don't do gouging, my forte is assembly line production and massive volume sales at fair prices - it's all about inventory turns
