My boyfriend runs EQ2 on Ubuntu on his second desktop that doesn't have any version of Windows installed. Initially it was just as an experiment and now it's to two-box from time to time (that computer was going to be for the TV).

The computer isn't high-end so the interesting graphics issues might be from its lack of stellar hardware rather than Wine. Textured surfaces get reflections instead of the texture they normally do. But, it's very playable and has less lag than it would have if it was installed with Windows.

Is Ubuntu's popularity because of Dells adoption? I have a hard time keeping up with the latest flavors.

.. And I've always been a BSD guy.

I think that has a lot to do with the popularity.

Also I have gotten eq2 to work on fedora 8 with some slight modifications. I am running it through wine, with no major problems. The game loads and boots just fine. There are some graphical issues though. Hopefully soon these can be resolved.

Ubuntu's popularity was going up before Dell started offering it on their PCs.

I think it has to do with a centralized, friendly community support forum, low pay-for-support rates, ease of use (for Linux), and people starting to look for cheaper alternatives to the Windows+Office combo.

I think some rich guy threw a lot of money at marketing it when it first was launched a few years ago, I remember there being ads for it various places.

I originally had that problem as well. Only way I was able to get it to work is to run the game from within winefile. When I do that it only has to download a few game files locally for the patcher but it detects the rest of the game from the directory where its installed.
