ActiveX was the "easy way out". It is what Microsoft invested their time in, rather than investing in Java. I am not saying Java is perfect, but Microsoft went out of their way to make Java imperfect by misimplementing it, then fighting it, then choosing NOT to include it with the OS.

It is really hard to discuss these things when you actually think that Java is Sun's response to ActiveX or vice versa (and Yes ActiveX was out in its earliest versions in Windows 3.11 - before Java).
They are two completely different technologies. Java is a non-standardized programming language, ActiveX is a component technology.
You can create and use ActiveX components in Java - in fact quite a few ActiveX controls are implemented in Java and guess how Sun actually distribute their Java implementation? Uhh you are right, through an ActiveX control at java.com: Hot Games, Cool Apps

What you are thinking off is Java Applets, which is a componentized technology for integrating extended GUI applications into the browser.

But first off - Microsoft was forced to not include their implementation of the JVM, since Sun was bitching that the MS JVM included extended functionality and thus anything created for it would not neccessary run on Sun's JVM. Read about it here

Microsoft wrongly felt that security prompts were unnecessary and a 'bad user experience'. I remember when ActiveX was really taking off.
Microsoft had rejected Java because it was "annoyingly secure" and not tied into the OS enough to do what they wanted to do.

I very much doubt MS feels anyting, they do stuff to make money, not to cater to their competitors, and if you made money selling an OS you wouldn't want users to actually use it?

Besides if the Java Applets were so darn hot as you claim why isn't anyone using them today?

Yes, because networked PCs are clearly the way of the future. As I stated, without MS drive and that includes their implementation of IE ActiveX controls, we would be discussing this on a BBS and EQ2 would just be a MUD - since no server nor any networks can render 3D data (not even 2D) to multiple connected clients. You have to use a browser that was designed from the ground up to not be permissive. Rather than starting with full access to the PC and taking away a piece at a time with hundreds of patches, you should start with NO access to the PC and gradually add it as needed. This is basic network security design. It is a shame you have never learned it.

So it is basic network security? Wow, yeah I sure missed that in my classes and so have most of the 'experts' in their books. They probably missed it because you are talking about application security and not network security - I doubt many networks really care what bits they are sending through, as long as they are not malformed.

Probably why you also missed that Activex is a technology and Java is a language running in a VM, which actually can be used to create ActiveX stuff.

As I told you before; Go read up on the foundations of the technology you are talking about, then come back and discuss it. It is not really that amusing having discussions with folks who don't really know what they are talking about.

im going to throw this in the mix how about act auto combat tracker would or could that be hacked so they get your info that way

i know it logs files etc on your chrs we have that installed i forgot all about it when i said we didnt have 3rd party program

Every single piece of software you use could be hacked. ACT could be hacked so that the latest version includes a keylogging portion while it's running. Ventrilo could be, everything could be. There is nothing special about ACT that makes it more or less prone to being hacked.

at the moment from what every one has written asumming no ones bs theres no common ground

just a totaly mystery to me how these people can get in and hack your account
