Why all the hate? A little perspecitve.
Let me preface this by saying, I just started EQ2, I know nothing of what the game used to be, how it has changed, or what most of the drama you guys are talking about is even in reference to.
I am simply trying to offer a little perspective into all this SOE bashing I see going on, even though I don't understand it, and if I did maybe I would feel differently.
Incoming wall of text, hopefully someone will read it.
I played WoW since the day it came out. I have two level 70's. I met my current girlfriend and potential wife in World of Warcraft. I became an officer and raid leader in an end-game guild who shall remain nameless. I saw every raid boss in the game die. I cleared every dungeon. Had every mount. Did PvP, had every recipie for my tradeskills. Spent countless hours grinding factions. Built a website for my guild. All in all, for the past 3 years my life revolved around World of Warcraft.
I quit.
Why? The game is easy, boring, and attracts too many immature players. The game is incredibly dumbed down, now more then ever. I see lots of complaints about NPU and the like having devs in their guild. Do you think Nihilum, Death and Taxes, Curse, etc don't have devs in their guild? Those wow guilds have so many fanboys you cant even count them. They clear raid zones on the test realm then get world firsts on the day the content is released. Great fun.
PvP is nothing more then a total grind, always has been.
The only thing I can say that is awesome about WoW is Blizzard, as they are an amazing company who has made some of my all time favorite games.
I still pay for my old guilds Ventrillo server and maintain the guild website, those are the types of relationships I formed in the game.
Again, I quit.
I see people posting screenshots of their EQ2 cancellation left and right, and thats fine, it happens all the time, but why post your angry outbursts here? I mean, seriously.
MMO's are like a drug, or a family. People defend the game they play to the death, renouncing any merit in any other game out there. Its the nature of the beast. People must justify the countless thousands of hours they spend in front of the computer somehow, and don't want to feel they are spending their time and money playing around in the inferior "world".
If I posted on my old WoW guilds forums about how I was playing EQ2 I would get laughed out of existence, much like how people LOL at me in EQ2 when I tell them I used to play wow. Its the same everywhere.
SOE definetly doesn't do a great job with customer support and satisfaction, I will give you guys that. Lets just hope that the Activision/Blizzard merger doesnt fuck that company up too.
Onto my initial experiences with EQ2, and for the purposes of this writing, I will compare it to WoW.
First off, no matter how dumbed down EQ2 is now vs when it came out, or how it compares to EQ1, it is still a much more vast and complicated game then WoW will ever be. My girlfriends SIX YEAR OLD nephew, has a level 31 character in WoW, and he can't even read.
I am a computer engineer who has almost completed my masters degree and I am still learning new things in EQ. The amount of content is easily twice as much as wow has, just in land mass and quests alone.
More of everything.
The game is pretty damn good, from my point of view currently (take that how you will, I am level 34).
EQ2, 1 expansion per year, no matter how buggy you all claim they are.
WoW, 1 expansion since release. I was max level in 2 weeks, cleared all the content in the game within the first year basically.
EQ2, like 30 classes and races, wow has like 8.
The AA system is much more rewarding the wows talent point system.
Gear is just as fucked in wow as it is in EQ, at least in EQ tradeskills are kinda usefull, in wow they are a gimmick for non raiders, with the exception of Jewelcrafting and Enchanting, no raid ready player uses any crafted gear, at least not anymore.
As for grouping and overall quality of players...I am assuming the population of my server "Guk" is much lower then that of my wow server was. Yet, People are 100x more friendly, and helpful. I have people offering to help me all the time, people mentor down to help me kill some named, people send me tells to explain how the tradeskill system works. People are polite, usually. In wow if you ask a noobish question you get a noobish response "LOL n00b! lern2wow!" In eq you usually get a mature, respectful answer. Take that for what you will of the player base EQ2 is attracting. Its not all about popularity.
I find myself saying every day as I play EQ2, "Wow, what a shame this game doesn't have more players" Because it deserves them. The graphics are beautiful, the game is fucking massive and very robust, and its just overall better.
Again, I am not level 80 so I cant speak for the raids, for all I know it could be total shit.
Let me put it this way. Play the game cause its fun, try to complain less. Look at it like this - Eventually any MMO you play will disappear, weather it lasts 1 year or 15 years, it WILL disappear, and all that time you spent will disappear along with it. Try not to get so damn pissed off. I spend 6 hours a day or more in front of my pc, and I recognize that at some point all the time is "wasted". Just like any xbox game, ps3 game, or any tv show you watch, its all wasted time. As long as you are having fun, thats the whole point, right?
You can bash this game and go play wow, or bash wow and stick with this. To each their own, I just really get sick of seeing people trying to shove their opinions and actions down other peoples throats.
Its like "IM QUITTING, AND I WOULD FEEL A LOT BETTER ABOUT DOING THAT, SINCE I DOUBT MYSELF, IF A BUNCH OF OTHER PEOPLE QUIT WITH ME!"
Come on now, grow up.
I for one, hope that EQ2 sticks around for a while, and that its not the sinking ship you guys claim it is because I am enjoying myself in the game quite a bit.

And that my friend is why you have no idea what the majority of people are bitching.

Your opinion of wow comes from you being burnt out on it I assume. I played eq2 like you said you did wow. I was in one of the best raid guilds in the game ( If not the best at times) and can honestly say eq2 is a horrible game. WoW is a lot more fun and ill end with that.

Re: Why all the hate? A little perspecitve.
A large number of the people who post here are raiders, or at least on the high end of the content, so if you aren't at least at max level, then you really don't know why people are bitching.
Besides, you probably haven't been around long enough to see some of the "better" shows of SoE's superb customer care.

Re: Why all the hate? A little perspecitve.
This game is fun when you are not
a) Feared
b) Stifled
c) Stunned
d) Mezzed
e) Controlled
The game is fun when you are rewarded for playing on raid, unless you like to transmute. The game is fun when it is about skill, knowledge, problem solving skill,
co-operation and organization, not when it is a random game of dice with a random generator.
And if you are wondering, you are right, eq2 is a good game compare to alot of the MMO out there, but being the best of the worst is not a cause to celebrate.
I think the time is about right for another break through MMO to come out.

Re: Why all the hate? A little perspecitve.
EQ2 is probably the best MMO period at the low level, however, the higher you get(as some here have pointed out) the worse it gets.
The endgame is more or less one swift kick in the snatch after another.
RoK had alot of promise, but SoE keeps fucking shit up at every turn.
They can still turn it around, but it's gonna require some non-idiotic decision making, and some really creative shit for the next expansion to get them out of the development corner they're currently painting themselves into.

I was about to say something to this affect, but you covered it nicely. Lower levels of the game were developed when they still cared... now they push product out as fast as possible without giving a fuck how bugged and broken it is; anything to make that buck. They won't wake up and realize that most of us would gladly wait two years or more for an expansion...if...it...just...worked... (but that's another topic).

Re: Why all the hate? A little perspecitve.
I figured this would turn into a flame fest, why shouldn't it.
Like I said, defend the game you play to the death.
Is the raid loot in any other fucking MMO, NOT on a random number generator?
Do you know how rewarding it was to kill an endgame boss in wow 60 times and not get my last set piece, meanwhile noob ass guilds who killed the boss 6 months later had players decked out in their full sets like they were something special?
Its all bullshit.
WoW isn't a better game, trust me, you'll get just as burnt out on that game as you do on any other. It is a very good game, but its not night and day better then this, it just has so many damn players that the community support for it is vast, and the monetary resources blizzard has to work with are insane.
Do you remember when C'Thun was unkillable, same with Vashj. How much of a "kick in the snatch" is that? You race to be the first to kill a boss, just to find its unkillable for a month while all the other guilds catch up, just so you can be beaten to the first kill by a guild who didn't deserve it due to time zone differences on patch day?
You think every other mmo doesn't have the same flaws?
Honestly, Warhammer will suck unless you are really into PvP (which I am not), in which case it will probably be good.
I look at conan the same way I look at Lord of the Rings online, a silly game based on some books or movies that can really only go so far. I really cant see myself playing a game based on a character played by Arnold Schwarzanegger.
I wish a new revolutionary MMO would come out, I truly do. I have tried so many just to be disappointed time and time again.
Eve, bleh.
Guild Wars, lol.
FFXI, meh.
WoW, obviously good, gets old fast.
EQ2, new to me, enjoying it so far, maybe it sucks later, we will see.
What else is there?
Hundreds of MMO's are out there and basically everyone plays the same 5 or 6 games.
Can it really be THAT bad?
Obviously you guys got shafted hard right in the fucking mouth to have such outward hatred toward this game.
WoW will be new and exciting to you for a bit, just like this game is for me, and Im sure in the next few months we will both have negative things to say respectively.
The fact is, you buy a game to play it and have fun. Its not like SOE adopted you as their bastard son then raped you in the ass. No one forced you to play, no one forces you to continue playing. So quit, like many of you have, and walk away.
The point of this post was to ask, why do so many people who have quit the game still come here to bitch about it? Does it really make you feel your decision to quit is more validated?
Like I said before, my guess is, it makes everyone who quit this game feel just a little better about the wasted time they have spent when a half a dozen other angry teenagers agree with them.
