Re: To buy EQ2 or not to....
If you're looking for a PvP server, and a guild to level with through the low levels and fun people to hang out with, look up Day of Vengeance, Freeport Vox server.
You won't get ganked repeatedly on Vox with the low pops and the no more twinks. DoV is really cool people, very casual, and players of all level ranges. They're insanely helpful and some of the nicest people around.
And no, I'm not in DoV. I'm in an exile raiding guild. If PvP is your flavor, and gank fests is not, try them out till level 30 or so.
If you want a great class that's good in PvP and allows for solo'ing in PvP in the mid to higher levels, start up a Wizard.

They are, after 3 years of single pulling with a guardian, playing an SK's much more fun. There're options on fights, multiple groups are manageable, and you can solo heroics easier.
However, a lot of people don't take them seriously as tanks for groups and most raid builds completely ignore the class.

Re: To buy EQ2 or not to....
Everything in this thread is so negative...I think alot of it is hardcore raiders that have become disillusioned with the game ^_^
The thing about EQ2 is that it has changed quite a bit since its original inception. If you want to play a group-heavy MMO than EQ2 isn't the best idea because it has been shifting to a more solo-orientated environment. It used to be everyone soloed 1-20, now I would say its more common to solo 1-30, and 30-50 theres some groups, and 50-60 theres much less groups, and 60-70 theres a little more groups, 70-80 is totally solo, and then once you're at 80 a whole new area of the game opens up, where there's tons of groups, and you can finally access raid content.
So depending upon what level you're at, it becomes a completely different game. If you want a 100% group game, then EQ2 is not a good match for you. If you want a MMO PVP game, then EQ2 is not a good match for you. If you like a mix of soloing and grouping though, then EQ2 is great for you.
Another thing about raid content is that many people here on the forums complain how buggy it is, but honestly from what I saw of KoS+EoF+first 2 tiers of ROK raid content, it actually isn't that bad. If you are expecting a time-and-organization monstrosity like EQ1 where it takes hours to form up and often upwards 60 people to zerg content, then you will be disappointed with EQ2. If you really want that high-end, elite raiding experience, than EQ2 is not for you. But it is fantastic for casual raids that can be finished usually within 2-3 hours.
So, in summarization, if you are a casual gamer then EQ2 is good for you, as long as you don't mind soloing. If you are a hardcore gamer and are only looking for group/raid content, then EQ2 is probably a bad choice for you.
Another thing I would add is that if you really want to PVP, I'd recommend trying a game that was built to support it from the ground up -- like shadowbane, daoc, wow, etc. EQ2 does have PVP options but its not very well supported or balanced compared to other games. On the other hand though, I don't think there's any game out there other than EQ1 that can rival the sheer amount of PVE content that EQ2 has.

I am casual and I still recommend that other people play just about anything but this.

EQ2 isn't that bad guys, there are plenty of worse MMOs on the market. ;P
But it's all up to how you're going to play. I manage to enjoy the game with what little time I have to play it currently (college :<) but as many mentioned before, it's not as hard as it used to be. You'll find areas once filled with heroic mobs now solo.
Also, if you play on Nagafen, DO NOT ROLL A NECRO OR A CONJ I MEAN IT SERIOUSLY TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS ARRRGGGGGHH.
Try the trial thing, assuming they still have it.

I was always told eq2 sucked but it doesn't seem so bad. It seems a bit dumbed down though compared to games I've enjoyed before.
So how bad is SOE these days? Still stealth nurfing, ruling the official forums with secret police, and refusing to admit things are broken in game?
I really don't want to give them any of my money but it does seem somewhat fun.

Just in March there was a huge outflux of coercers because of a stealth nerf. For months before the patch (LU#42) the patch notes said that Coercer pets ON PVP SERVERS would be nerfed. When the patch hit Coercer pets were nerfed on all servers. SoE is up to its same old shit. They have a goon squad that bans people from the forums and they still nerf the shit out of everything in site. That's what happens when you are getting destroyed so hard in the industry; you can't afford a full development team. There is 1 guy in charge of 24 classes. Do you think there is 1 guy in charge of all of the WoW classes? No. Anyways, don't bother buying this garbage ass game. It is dying and the release of AoC, WAR and the hugely epic WoW expansion will gut it out completely. It is a never ending source of anger every time the patches hit. Trust me.

Let me derail this for a moment and point out that unless you are working a full time job while you are in college, you will never again in your life have as much free time to goof off as you have while you are in college. (Unless you are unemployed and not looking for work 'cause you're too busy getting stoned everyday, or you become fabulously wealthy so that you don't need to work.

Following that derail, unless you're studying architecture. In that case, change your major, ditch EQ2, and get some sunshine.

Community college, and I take care of dying family members often. That's why.
And no job yet. :<
